What about the W140? There was the S350 as well as the 300SD TurboDiesel W140's.

Yes, there was.

I’m reading the topic as best combo engine and chassis, which is why I selected the 126D. The 617 and 603 were the best engines DB made and the chassis was way ahead of its time. Although I love my 123 the 300 SD’s more modern chassis had was less prone to rust and leaking.

yup. I had a 1981 300 SD at one point, and I have to admit, it was very good. Very good car.

The W140 diesels supposedly weren't that good.

So.... my vote for the best diesel has to go for the W126.

I believe the 3.5 L engine used in the 140s (and that replace the ill-fated engines in the 126 cars) had stronger rods and better intakes to avoid the bending problem. But I don’t think it was ever completely fixed.

I love 126s but I really think the 300D was the best diesel anyone ever made.
They seem to last forever.

Yeah, 123Ds are tough cars but they never steer straight and leak like a sieve.

Re: POLL : Best Diesel?

Our list of diesels brings back a lot of happy memories. Only once have I had to call a tow truck for a diesel in 32 years of driving Mercedes!
1961 190db, Starter went bad and had to tow.
1983 240 D
1985 300 DT
1983 300 TD
1985 300 TD
1985 300 SD
1993 350 SD
1985 300 GD Gelandewagen
Only 2 of these vehicles are no longer on the road!
My favorite was the 1983 240 D.

JDC, pardon my ignorance but do you mean engine oil leaks? Are they truly endemic to the tribe?

I'd have to take this into consideration on my next 'semi-classic' purchase....

The crooked steering isn't so bad..might correct for my own

I voted w123, only because I believe that diesel aficionados have a special appreciation for simplicity, and the w123 represents simplicity above and beyond a w126.

that is true. The W123 has less things to go wrong, cuz the W126 is a little more advanced.

Sorry, I should be more specific: the windshield seals leak, water in the footwells; the sunroof seals leak, water in your lap (the s/r drain holes can also clog); rear window leak, water in the trunk.

Yes, 126s can leak as well but windshield and sunroof leaking is very rare, they mostly have leaking rear windows.

My vote is for "any CDI" because I just love all the torque they put out.

Every MB Diesel is very good.
Main thing is how was maintained?
I have 190D 1984 900 000 Km.
Now I am swapping Engine on my 260E - Gas for Diesel 2.5L non turbo.
Newer Diesels are better - more power - new technology.

Oh wow... that's sobering. Reminds me of my old Jaguar! Thanks I think....
