It just strikes me as strange that teh new S600 costs more than the average house here and teh 560 would have been the same and that there were no leather seats. Notice also I think that the climate controls are not euro spec?

jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: NZ 560SEL yeah, those are auto climate controls, an option in the European market like the leather seats - standard in the US market. Caddys and Lincolns had standard leather and automatic everything so MBs came with that stuff to compete. In the early 90s Lexus and Infiniti started selling worldwide and MB had to follow suit.

Oh OK, I think not having leather makes the car look very dated IMO.

nomad Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: NZ 560SEL I agree, leather is far better and velour shouldn't have been available even as an option in the flagship models (500/560) Though, if in good condition, the velour material as seen in that 560 is very luxurious to feel with it's velvety texture It's soft, warm and you don't slide around, it just doesn't say luxury when you look at it Even Caddies in the seventies and eighties had velour as a cost option on some models, though the 'crushed' velour in those was far more plush than the rather staid looking benz type

I dunno why.... :cool:Note, in various limousines, RR Phantoms for instance, there was leather in the chauffeur's compartment and cloth in the passenger cabin. Cloth has its appeal when done well, although of course it's not as durable...

DB tailored the cars for the given market - airbags were technically an option but were de facto standard in US cars.
