Rearview Interior Mirror

I noticed my rearview mirror had a kind of bulge in the case. I turned it around and the springs and DAY/NIGHT tab along with the bottom part of the case fell out! Heat and 16 years of sun took their toll! I installed an '85 mirror, but it is not quite the same. Very similar however. I have a 91 mirror on the way. Anyone had this happen?

I heard number of similar incidents during the past year.  16 years of UV and heat indeed.

Reminds me of Comet (first commercial jetliner).  Early designs did not take repetitious stress caused by change of pressure outside the cabin into account that several planes exploded in mid-air.

Glad you caught yours early before it shattered.  I was advised to check it annually, in spring, by my mech.

WOW...weird.... so can the same thing happen with the side-view mirrors which have that poisonous substance floating around inside??
