Getting more from my N/A OM617

I have a normally aspirated OM617 in my 300GD. It's a great strong engine, performs like the real workhorse it is when I'm off-road. The only problem (as I'm sure any W460 300GD owner would attest) is the sluggish performance. I can cope with this ok around town but the trip down the highway to work every morning gets a bit tedious.

The engine has 250,000 km on it and has just had a new injector pump installed as well as new injectors; it's backed up by a 4 speed automatic. I don't want to swap to a 617A just yet (their availability downunder is a limiting factor), also the fact that it's a RHD doesn't make this the best proposition anyhow.

Just trying to put a few more ponies in there so as I can stay at the speed limit (100 km/h) for the slightly undulating trip to and from work?

Re: Getting more from my N/A OM617

Sorry, I should also have mentioned:

I'm running 33" tall tires. Would using lower-ratio differential gears really help me on the highway?

i would suggest that u eliminate the muffler(s), and run 3 inch pipes (7,62cm) as ur exhaust.....

then i would search around and find a performance intake (i dont know if they make them for NA diesels)

u could switch to 100% synthetic fluids in ur motor, transmission, and differential......

u could mess with the injector pump's settings...... (see the link to the super-turbo site in my signature)

other than that i have no ideas for you.......

RE: Getting more from my N/A OM617

Adjust the ADA (Like the ALDA on a turbo engine). There is pretty much nothing else that will help. "Performance" air filter will do nothing, and cutting off your exhaust will just make it LOUD.

Re: Getting more from my N/A OM617

Thanks for the ADA hint. I live in the Australian Alps, surely if this is out of adjustment then it would have something to do with the lack of power. The truck blows no smoke at all, even under hard load up steep hills.

So where is my ADA? I know where it should be.

RE: Getting more from my N/A OM617

DOH. Darn euro injection pumps....

You need to send that M-pump to me and I'll send you my MW-pump. j/k

You should be able to adjust the full load setting pretty easy on that pump.

Re: Getting more from my N/A OM617

ForcedInduction that's an excellent post, thanks for your help.

I'm going to give it a try and see how it works. I'm not expecting miracles but seeing as though mine is the cleanest running Diesel I've ever come across (you'd swear it had a particulate filter) I suspect it might be slightly under fueling.

there's no hope on getting extra power on these 617 diesel engines unless you add a turbo or rebuilt your engine to restore horsepower imho!

Re: Getting more from my N/A OM617

Yeah I guess you're right DieselBurns, I'm spoiled as well after driving my wife's w124 300E. I don't want it to be a rocket ship, I would just like a few more horses though, just so I can stay at the speed limit on my way to work and back.

The whole injection system was replaced by the previous owner last year, but after reading this thread and your advice I've got to thinking that it would have been tuned in Sydney (at sea level) in Autumn/Winter, so while it may have been running like a train then now that I've taken it home to the hills (ok, so Australia isn't exactly known for it's alps - but we've actually got more "alpine" area than Switzerland and Austria combined) I can see why it's such a slug.

Re: Getting more from my N/A OM617

Maybe where you live the air is thin so the engine has trouble getting all the air molecules to the piston so it can give proper hp! What you can do for your engine is run fuel suplements like barely legal octane booosters! All I can think of getting more power into these 617 diesel engines is port polish, better turbos, intercooler, better injectors, more octane in the fuel, and remember the diesel engines don't have a octane limit, propane injection. its hard to do so much on a mechanical engine with no computers and chips! Especially on a unique straight five diesel engine! If you want a superturbo Mercedes diesel engine that will kill the atmosphere get a w124 126 201 diesel engine! The w123 diesel engines are classic now so I would just leave them alone becuse straight up imho your not gona get much ponies from them! That's what I think but who know I'm just crazy!

Yes yes, quite right you are crazy. Still you seem to know a little bit more about these things than I so I'll take your word for it.

Diesel engines don't need "octane" boosters... Gas engines might. His engine does not have a turbo- so a better turbo or intercooler won't help. Better injectors will only make a difference if you have a highly modified IP and highly modified fuel and air delivery system. Propane injection does nothing for a N/A diesel. You may be able to get a few more HP by adjusting the IP as suggested- but be sure that you have the right information - most "tuner" info is for the turbo charged versions of the 617. Be sure you have the cold air intake working properly- you could even get the slightly larger turbo cold air intake. Otherwise there is really very few things you can do for a 617 N/A engine other than make sure it is maintained properly.
