mbz_lover Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Best Diesel motor oil?? I am a newbie to diesel and just purchased a 99 E300d and want to know the best motor oil to use as well as mileage intervals to change it at. I am also starting to run biodiesel (sometimes B50, sometimes B99) in it. Driven daily in southern California. Freeways, gridlock, canyons and such. Any help in keeping this daily driver in Los Angeles running smooth and happy is appreciated.

If you use a good dino C rated oil changed every 3000 to 5000 miles you’ll see as many miles as my 300 D. It’s only know dino and it runs perfectly. Dello, Delvac, Rotella, RX, are all fine oils that will keep your engine running forever if otherwise well cared for.

Hi All, I too have just acquired a diesel powered Mercedes, so this is a timely thread for me. In fact, I just did my first oil change on it today and was debating whether to use Amsoil synthetic or regular Rotella. I decided on Rotella, although like BenzDieselTuner, I normally use Amsoil products exclusively. My reasoning went like this: First, I have the impression that due to their higher compression, diesels foul their oil faster than gas engines through increased blow-by. With that in mind, I'll have a hard time sticking to my usual extended drain intervals for synthetic oil, regardless of initial quality. So in that case I might as well use the dino stuff. I would be interested to know what others think of this philosophy. Bruce

jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Best Diesel motor oil?? That’s my philosophy as well, particularly with the 61x engines – they’re almost ‘organic.’ Fresh often is as good – perhaps better – than a long change interval synthetic. One problem I see with synthetic is the filter, I don’t know how beneficial it is to use synthetic with a standard filter; it can be argued long change intervals should be with a fleece filter. I believe changing dino oil every 3000 to 5000 miles will protect an engine was well as synthetic. Synthetic is better, no doubt – but I believe it’s relative. In other words, with dino oil changed often a 617 could go 501,236 miles before a rebuild where the same engine on synthetic will go 502,322 miles before the rebuild – in the long run its much the same.
