I don't care for the new MBs but this would be cool: "Introducing the new GL CDI 4MATIC.2 With a breakthrough in diesel technology, the new GL320 CDI 4MATIC™ delivers remarkable fuel efficiency and power worthy of its muscular stance. Its turbocharged V-6 diesel engine generates an amazing 398 lb-ft of peak torque, enabling quick acceleration and towing capability. And for all its strength, the GL320 CDI still affords you approximately 30-percent better fuel economy than vehicles equipped with comparable gasoline engines. 2. The GL320 CDI does not meet emissions requirements for California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, or Vermont, and is not available in these states." I wish they come out with a E320 CDI 4 matic wagon! My mother might sell her 1990 300E and her 1998 Mercury mountaineer to get herself a merc wagon with 4 matic!

Gas SUVs are hated for their poor fuel mileage these CDIs are considerably more efficient, will run perfectly on home-grown BioD (perhaps run better), and are almost as clean as gassers with regard to emissions. The only down side is the higher price of diesel.

I will pick up my 2007 ML320 CDI on Monday. EPA numbers are 19 & 27, which is pretty good for a 4800 lb curb weight vehicle. If I want more power, there are several chips available- Carlsson and Kleemann to mention a couple.

I wonder what's magical about that 19 mpg number..... It's the same as my buddy Barry gets in everyday driving from his Jeep Liberty with the 4 cylinder diesel, and the same as I get in everyday driving from my '79 vintage 300. Of course Barry claims a best-tank-ever of 32 mpg on the highway and I know the 300 wouldn't ever aproach that. It'll be interesting to see what the CDI does in the ML. It'll also be interesting to see if you can justify any more x-country trips in the G, Dutch! :) -Dave G.
