Diesel Pump Nozzles

I went to fill up at a Shell station where I have filled before, but tried to use a different pump today. The nozzle was much larger than on the other pumps and would not fit into my fill tube.

Are there different sized nozzles, like there used to be with leaded and unleaded gasoline pumps? (New to diesel and still learning.)

Re: Diesel Pump Nozzles

hahaha! Yes there are different type of nozzles especially, the diesel pumps at a 18 wheeler station! Did the pump also say that the person who was there paid like 250$ on diesel!

Nope. It was a plain vanilla convenience store setup. It was being run by a Patel, so he could have found his pump nozzles piece by piece at a bargain price.

RE: Diesel Pump Nozzles

There are three kinds of nozzles I’ve come across. The ones at the big-rig pump, which I’ve never used, large nozzles for non-tractor/trailer trucks, and nozzles that are smaller, about the size of an old leaded pump.

The non-tractor/trailer nozzle just fits my filler tube – it wedges tight under an arched brace about half way down and is sometimes hard to extract. Those are combo truck and car nozzles. I like them b/c the tank fills quickly but you have to manually shut them off or you’ll get a spill.

RE: Diesel Pump Nozzles

I've used the big-rig nozzles before. The key is to throttle the flow to minimize foam and overflow.

Re: Diesel Pump Nozzles

In Australia all Diesel pumps must be labled "Warning! Diesel" and you actually must push a lever for the pump to operate.

We also have High Capacity Diesel pumps here, again there is a warning and a lever that must be operated for the pump to operate.

A High Capacity pump can fill my W460 from empty in well under a minute.

Re: Diesel Pump Nozzles

Yea, what they said. I used a big rig pump on the Pennsylvania Turnpike once and made the mistake of using the autofill holder. BIG MISTAKE. Fuel shot like 8 feet from the filler and all over the pump. The TT drivers all had a good laugh.

RE: Diesel Pump Nozzles

All the diesel pumps pull from the same tank. There is no real benefit to using the large nozzles unless you are SO crunched for time
that the 30 seconds can make a difference.
