alternator upgrade?

My little sister has 78 450 SEL that needs a new alternator but since we are putting a system in the car I was hoping to upgrade to something better than the stock 55 amp alt that came stock does anyone know of an upgrade kits or alternators off of a new MB that would work?

RE: alternator upgrade?

For starters, does the system run off the battery and the alternator charge the battery or does the system run off the alternator once the battery is charged? I believe it should run off the battery at all times but I don't know how the particular one you're talking about does. So long as the battery runs the system and you're fused for it, it should be okay to upgrade to a 75 or even a 100 amp. I would consult an electronic auto guru before trying anything. I certainly wouldn't do it myself on this one.

The answer to your question is yes, there is an upgrade available.  All the way to a whopping 65 amps.  The fact of the matter is that with the car being mechanically injected, you really don't need much more.  Some shops will custom build you a 100 or more amp unit, but you'll just be wasting it.

Re: alternator upgrade?

I found a Bosch 55, 65 & 75 amp alternator at Partstrain.com, Carpartswholesale.com and Partsguru.com.....I'd check the various web site for 116 parts and see who has what you want. Autohaus.com also has some decent stuff.

Good luck.
