c250d Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | c class small water leak I have a 96 c class 2.5 diesel, its a non turbo 5 cyl 20v, i guess its just a 3.0 24v with a cylinder lopped off really, problem is i have a very small water leak. It takes around 6 tankfulls of fuel to lose a litre of water wich is no big deal but i wondered wether there were any common problems with these engine types, ive checked the engine oil and its never shown even a drop of water or milky residue. Hope its not a cracked head or anything pricey, will get it up to temp the weekend and stick my head under the radiator the weekend and look for trouble but i fear until it gets any worse im on a loser to find it or has anyone better idea?

BenzDieselTuner Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: c class small water leak it just occurred to me that u may be experiencing a problem i had.......maybe your cap for the coolant tank's pressure relief valve spring is worn out, and this is causing it to leak steam constantly, when under pressure, thus creating your gradual water loss......

It turned out to be a leaking head gasket. It leaked near the firewall and I could eventually trace it from white anti-freeze streaks underneath the gearbox. Turned out to be quite an expensive gasket replacement ~US$2,000. The wiring harness had gone brittle and had to be replaced ($1,000). Car had done close on 200,000kms but engine insides still absolutely spottless - no detectable wear. Have since clocked another 30,000kms, trouble free. David (Johanesburg, South Africa)
