350 Diesel Engine

I have a Gwagon that has one of the 350 turbo diesels and like a lot of others it has gone the way of smoking and running like poo.
In talking to many people rebuild is the way to go, found someone in Florida to take care of that.
He told me that the main cause is the results of a bad glow plug, thus a lot of unburnt fuel building up and con rod bending.
Anyone here have more insight into the whole well known 350TD engine failures ?
And yes it is the original engine

RE: 350 Diesel Engine

This has been and will continue to be discussed a great deal-- the bad part is that noone knows. If Mercedes knew, it'd have trickled down to us in the 10 or so years since they discontinued the 3.5 diesel.

Most say it is something of what you mention, but I've always heard of coolant being the cause and not fuel-- they're both liquids, so the result would be the same.

The best fix is to install a 3.0(om603), they're direct fit, if I'm not mistaken. You lose a bit of power, but gain much reliability and haven't got an almost $10k(dealer price) liability sitting under your hood anymore.

I sort of agree but I am getting a total rebuild and getting a 4 year unlimited milage so I think I may be ok. They guy said they have only got one back out of about a thousand + so I feel safe

You'll still have to replace it because of the same issue again. The only real way to remedy the problem is to install a different series engine.

Then you'll get to worry about a cracked head instead! Ahh.. Mercedes diesels-- Engineered like no other.

RE: 350 Diesel Engine

If you get a new engine directly from MB ($$$$$$$) it will never have the rod bending problem.

"He told me that the main cause is the results of a bad glow plug, thus a lot of unburnt fuel building up and con rod bending."

That's just ANOTHER guess as  to the root cause. Truth is, NOBODY knows the real reason why they bend except possibly MB and they will never tell. Anyways, A bad glowplug cannot cause the rod to bend. The engine will build up enough heat on it's own after 20-30 seconds of running on 5 cylinders to start firing on all 6. The amount of fuel injected into one cylinder in that time of idling amounts to less than a few milliliters of fuel.

Re: 350 Diesel Engine

The rebuild comes with new and stronger aftermarket con rods.
Hey I would be surprised if it is going to fail that it will wait 4 years

Re: 350 Diesel Engine

OK I got the answer as to what failed on my 350.
IT had the "Floating head" issue.
One, it was already a factory replacement,
two the only reason for this is not torquing the head correctly.
Fuck Wads, then again if it was still running I would of never gotten the chance to buy it.
So even if someone pays the $$$ For a MB engine they can still fail..

RE: 350 Diesel Engine

Can someone tell me where a good rebuilder of the 350 engine in the Northeast is?
I am told that a I cannot put a different engine in my 1991 350sdl. The body and chassis
are in great shape and I just had a new tranny installed. The engine is Kaput.

The 3.0 L 603 will fit perfectly in your 126 and is strong and reliable. Much better option than rebuilding the 3.5.
