Problems with a mint W126

When I got my car, it sat in my garage until the weather was excellent enough to drive it. I was so excited and could think of nothing but driving it.

Now that I drive it once every two days, I've come to the conclusion that I absolutely hate driving it - it feels like a bloody shame to use it, since it's such a time capsule. I almost wish it had a lot more kms on it, or was more "used", or I didn't care so much about cars.

How do you guys get over driving your 126's and racking up the miles? With my 300SD it was like a game to see the odometer climb!

Maybe I need to get a second 126 - I was going to get a 560SEC in the same condition as my SEL from Japan.

Maybe split the kms up between the two of them

Or perhaps something other than a 126 for your 'daily driver', maybe a diesel 190 or something, good gas mileage and something that isn't going to make you unhappy when it racks up those nasty winter miles, while your SEL sits comfortably in your garage sleeping......

I have a 1984 Audi 4000S quattro for the winter - my 560's never been touched by snow before - so that's not a problem.

a 190D sounds like a good idea or maybe a 190E 2.3 that's in fair shape.

Alternatively, you can sell me your SEL. Deal?

Seriously, I have the same dilemma, I hate messing up my nice cars. It's slightly crazy.

RE: Problems with a mint W126

I have the opposite problem: I’m concerned about under-usage. April 30 was six months since I last changed the oil in both 126s but the 300 SE has gone only about 3200 miles and the 500 SEL has only gone about 1600! Yeah, I’m going to change the oil soon but it seems a waste.

Now that I’m in the country both 126s get to go on longer drives but the miles are still low. The 123d and the 300 SE share in daily driving duties. The 123 is used three days per week mostly. The 500 is for weekends and long trips only.

T, with all due respect I’d say you’ve got a non-issue. These cars were made to be driven. If cared for and kept clean the interior and exterior will last forever. I think you should not worry and enjoy you great car.

Whilst hanging on to a mint example is good, these cars were designed to be driven, great long highway drives.

But youv'e got ssecond cars, if you need another daily driver, get one that is soooo horrible that you are 'driven' back to the Benz

RE: Problems with a mint W126

yep, these beauties are meant to be driven.

to wither from lack of use, imo, is more sad than acquiring a dignified patina of minor rock chips and scratches from miles and miles of driving (usually accompanied by satisfaction and pleasure).

As for mine, a little under 300 miles more to go to break the 150K mile mark, 5-1/2K more to go until it earns its first high-mileage badge (155K or 250,000kms).  I must say, mine runs best after a good 3-hr run on the interstate.

I agree with most of the above posts, and think it is nice to have a pet car (whatever it may be). But when you drive it - THAT'S when it earns or not its garage/driveway space, and if it justifies your continuing ownership. When maintenance issues become a problem especially. The 'Car 4 Sale' world is full of "stored for X years" (owner has lost interest) examples.
