Also discuss the itinerary and more ideas on that. I'll be arriving Friday afternoon with a small posse of small people. We have a busy weekend so I think my wife isn't coming due to conflicts. I'll head back over the hill Sunday afternoon / evening depending on what we're doing Sunday. I'd have to depart the coast by around 5:00pm to be back to Bend at a "reasonable" hour. To reiterate, I'm bringing two cases of Deschutes Ales to share. - A Black Butte Porter and possibly Mirror Pond Pale Ale. I really miss Nearly Normal's (vegetarian cuisine) so I'm thinking one evening I'll go there for dinner. Bomb's Away (Mexican / Southwest) is good, too. Thanks again, Dai for hosting our motly assemblage!

There is interest in caravaning and carpooling from the various directions. There is a group coming down from Washington and one from the Bay Area of CA. I think these people are communicating with each other but posting ideas here will help with the connections. Again people are welcome to come here on Friday. If folks can make it here by around 10 AM on Saturday we leave by 11 or 12 to go up to the large vineyard I farm called Temperance Hill. Harald has offered to do a driving class and I think we can find some locations on the vineyard that would be interesting for him to use for instruction. (If he is not in agony from the very long drive from La Paz.) The final approach is: From Corvallis take Highway 20 West toward Newport, pass through Philomath (stay on 20) and about 5 miles from Philomath turn right on 223 the Kings Valley Highway, go one mile and turn right on Cardwell Hill Drive. We are the first right on that road, the big dog's name is Rico. His job is to bark. There is lots of Camping space for those of you who want to do that and a shower in the cabin. When I get a read on the weather I will post updates here, I have a great weather guru who is pretty accurate but it is a little early yet to know what is up, this has been a bizzare spring and very unstable patterns are still here. I look forward to having you all here and meeting many of you finally! -Dai

After looking over maps of local loops and checking in with Dai on the phone, there are several longer options and loops that folks can check out in the OR Coastal range near the farm. However, we were psyched to hear about a short local loop......for Sunday morning. This loop up and over the highest peak local to Dai's farm is paved road to the top, incredible 360 degree lookout over the entire range, but then moderate offroad back down the backside, possibly even some snow!!, and another graded dirt road with a covered bridge to get back. Dai says the access is just down the road. Total route time is only 1 hour to 1.5 hours roundtrip back to the farm. It is completely optional. The route is easy, not risky. Idea is, for those up for it, to go in the early AM, on Sunday, perhaps 8am in order to be back to rejoin others, wives that might sleep in, kids that sleep in, or those just wanting to relax by breakfast time. I'll announce again when we are all up there, and we can pick the time most comfortable to those opting to go on this short loop Sunday AM. regards, Mike Serpe

There is a chance of showers but we might see dry weather. The problem is the jet stream is heading right over the PNW and dragging systems with it. I'll post again on Monday with a better picture. -Dai

Lately when we have been getting these forecasts it has not rained and been a bit warmer then expected. We will see. Looking forward to seeing you here. -Dai

I am stressing because we are over 2 weeks behind and we need some warm weather to catch up and get these vines in bloom. But I digress... This is a Google map of the ranch: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=24000%2bcardwell%2bhill%2bd... I am hopeful that the weather will improve for Saturday and Sunday. Friday is lookin' damp. I look forward seeing you roll in. -Dai Edited by dai 6/3/2008 11:34 PM

Reminds me of the motto we have adopted for our annual mountain bike tour: "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." I guess that doesn't help the vines, though.

All, So far, the Bay Area contingent that I'm cruising with is leaving Friday morning between 6 and 8 AM. One of our convoy's Gs has to stay home with sick front wheel bearings. At the start, it is really just me and Craig Reece. Jeff G is riding shotgun. The thinking or hope is to meet up with Minh (maggot) in Redding or somewhere between there and Ashland. If Serpe managed to make it out with his thrown out back and mild fever, we're hoping to hook up with him in Ashland for a late lunch, somewhere around 2PMish. Should make it to Corvallis by dinner time hoping to call Dai on the way in and rendezvous for a meal with whomever (or whoever, i can never remember which one to use) has arrived by then. Anyone between here and there that would like to join the mini-convoy anywhere along the way, please give a holler. Steve 510-847-4049
