My mechanic let a good customer drive his 1985 300 TD sedan while his 190 D 2.5 TURBO was in the shop. A FORD F 150 slammed the 300 TD from a side street and spun it into a telephone pole. The 300 TD was hit in the right rear and spun into the pole with the left front fender. The fender wrapped around the pole just back of the wheel well. The wrecker had to pull it off the pole. The good news is that the driver was unhurt in the 300 TD and the truck driver was unhurt. I saw the 300 TD on the rack today and the front suspension is intact and fine along with the tierod ends and steering arm. AMAZING! The right rear wheel is cracked, but the frame is untouched. The car is drivable after a hit like this. The insurance company wants to offer $4,200 for the 300 TD. He's holding out for $6,000 after he documented all the work that he had done on it. This was a beautiful 1985 300 TD before the wreck. We will see if they can come to terms. The repair estimate was $9,000.

The story has a happy ending! He will save the car with a rebuild from parts he already had at the shop. The rebuild and new paint will cost around $3,500, so he has money left over for tires and two new wheels. This car is too nice to scrap.

If you carefully remove the passenger's front headrest you can indeed hadle two more feet. Don't make any sudden stops. I can tell you that when we were remodeling our last house, the wagon did duty as a pickup truck!

RE: sudden stops... as you know, no mfr supports its old cars as well as MB, with the possible exception of Volvo. I got a new windshield for my 3.5 (1971) from the dealer in 2004. Wasn't cheap but was it nice!

That is the reason that we enjoy them among a host of others. Our old 544 Volvo had 400,000 miles on it when we sold it for $300 in 1995. It had been in our family since 1964. The '58 180 joined the family in 1970.

Work is progressing and the 300 TD should be on the road in the next two weeks. The paint and bodywork ran about $3,200. The donor car still has a great interior and small trim parts.
