Re: well i have a 1986 diesel G wagen

its is not generally reccommended to turbocharge a non-turbo motor, the turbo motor has a special oiling system, to oil the piston rings............

other than that, u can switch to whatever the best synthetic oil u can get is, made 4 diesels, and u can get an intake for it............

boosting and fueling as well, but that is only reccommended when u have an exhaust temp indicator, and boost pressure gauge............

Re: well i have a 1986 diesel G wagen

i actually have the engine the turbo came off originally as well but it has a bent valve

i have had a close look at the 2 motors i have i was planning on swapping the oil pan, turbo, manifolds and injector pump across
would i be better off fixing the old engine and transplanting it

If the old engine is designed for a turbo then it may be a better idea. However are the G wagon powerplants designed to work with the running gear of the G wagon as in will the other motor work properly with the G?

Re: well i have a 1986 diesel G wagen

from what i understand these engines are virtually identical the only difference was the turbo

i'm not absolutely certain about this though

No, DBT is right – your G can not accommodate the turbo. As noted above due to the oiling system you'll need to install the turbo engine.

possibly...........i dont really know.........

as previously mentioned, the oiling system injects oil directly onto the piston rings, on every Rotation of the motor.........

There are differences between the turbo and non-turbo heads.   different prechambers Different valves from what I understand.  I'd recomend replacing the bent valves and generally having the head reconditioned.

THere are numerous differences between the turbo and non-turbo OM617 engines.  Nitrided cranks, different pistons (slightly lower compression in the turbo) under crown oil squirters for cooling the pistons, Injector pumps are different to allow increaced fuel delivery under boost....etc.

Best to do it right and use then engine designed as a turbo engine rather than try to mix and match parts and end up with something with seriously degraded durability as a result.
