The Icelandic maps that you just buy at the local wellstocked gas stations are pretty good really.
There is also this GPS map http://ourfootprints.de/gps/mapsource-island_e.html that some friendly germans have made. I found that very useful in planning.
The great thing about Iceland is that spectacular things are found all over. So you can go acording to weather conditions, make a very flexible plan. |

Actually I find that not all the printed maps are equally good, You will need to buy the ones with a blue/red cover, 1:300 000 called ÍSLANDSKORT.
Well assorted bookstores and some Tourist Offices will have them and the cost is 2000 Icelandic kroner.
The best track is IMO a unnamed track connecting the F461 and F210 just NE of Tindfjallajökull, It might be very slippery after rainfall and caution is needed on some step hills. If the weather cooperates you will get a spectacular view to the Mýrdalsjökull. Theres is a small river crossing, normally it will not be to deep to ford in a stock G.
Last summer was very wet and I barely managed to cross some of the deeper rivers, witch normally would not be a problem in a stock G, if you can manage to fit a snorkel before leaving home I would recommend this in order to have peace at heart. I actually got a fair amount of water inside my G and my air pump for the lumbar seats drowned in water. |

You´re welcome TD1,
if you travel across the interior from north to south (or vice versa) you should pick the track called the "Old Sprengisandur Trail", it runs parallel with the more used F26 but to the west from this, on F26 you will meet a lot of SUVs, I have never meet anybody on the Old Sprengisandur Track, and I´ve been there ten times, a few river crossing but not deep.
The Old Sprengisandur trail is unnamed and is not signposted, it starts/ends in the North just west of the lake Fjörðungsvatn. Never go on the F26 it is really badly corrugated, keep on SW on the unnamed tracks over the Kjalöldur and Búrðahals hils towards the bridge at Hrauneyar. If you have time take the detour to the waterfall at Dynkur, this might still be signposted from the trail, direction is NW.
The F910 from Askja to Tungafellsjökull is also a must.
The roundtrip to Laki on F206 is also spectacular, take the unnamed trail via Braun marked on the maps going back, there´s a very wide and fairly deep fast flowing river to cross just East of the river Skafrá, caution, you will have water entering the car here because it takes quite some time to cross, try to go in a strictly direct line between entry and departure points, at least that worked for me in 2015.
A visit to the Northern end of lake Langisjór is also worth your while, use the unnamed trail from F208 West of the F235, and maybe use F235 on the return drive, - take a detour to lake Blatulón, and maybe head further on the unnamed trail towards F208, - I have yet to do this myself, snow blocked it in sep. 2015.
The trails are all marked on the 1:300 000 maps, several are missing on the 1:600 000.

Once again, great information and thank you for sharing. It's good to know some local- level of knowledge and what to avoid, especially with the conditions of some of the tracks.
Very much appreciated. Unfortunately I will only have about 10 days of exploring and won't be bringing the G with me (renting a Defender).
