BenzDieselTuner Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | MBUSA announces 2007 diesels with more torque than expected The new efficient ML320 CDI and R320 CDI will have 221 hp (165 kW) and a whopping 398 lb.-ft. of torque, significantly more than the 369 lb.-ft. I had expected. This translates to 540 Nm, which is 30 Nm more than the Euro ML320 CDI or R320 CDIs have. The new clean E320 CDI Bluetec will have 210 hp and 388 lb.-ft., more than the 201 hp and 369 lb.-ft. of the inline six predecessor. Ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) should become available before year end. Have a look at the new stickers on the pumps. * The 2007 E320 CDI Bluetec, ML320 CDI, and R320 CDI do not meet the emissions requirements of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, or Vermont and are not available in these states. The dealer in RI offered to use it as a demo until the magic number. My question is if the Bluetec is so clean, why doesn't it pass the emission test? | ||

Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: MBUSA announces 2007 diesels with more torque than expected Roch207 - 9/4/2006 6:53 AM My question is if the Bluetec is so clean, why doesn't it pass the emission test? Here are some numbers published by the EPA from a test they did in 2003. Vehicle E is a Mercedes Bluetec diesel with NOx absorption catalyst, and conditioned to 50,000 miles. It achieves NOx emissions of 0.05 +/- 0.01 g/mi. The cutoff for 50 states (Tier 2 Bin 5) is 0.05 g/mi. So it was very close. Maybe Mercedes hoped the EPA would rule the car to be in compliance.
