shrimpton Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Engine transplant advice.. ..I've given up on the idea of a 280 motor upgrade to my 230CE, and am now looking at (and currently bidding on) a 2.3L engine tranny computer etc from a 1993 190E. Seems like a good idea anyway, but I wonder if there are potential hurdles that I should be aware of before I fully commit.

My choice factor is limited by local availability, and the fact that this is my wifes daily driver - and she has this weird idea that the bathroom has priority over her car!. Oh... and $'s have a wee part to play here as well. I have my toy (560SEL) she sees the 230CE as A to B transport...(I see lovely old Merc.) that currently is immobile. I can buy heaps of old motors - was just thinking this particular option sounds reasonable...so how about it - opinions welcome. Edited by shrimpton 4/29/2006 2:45 AM

You had a bead on a parts 280E once upon a time didn't you. Hope you didn't let those guys spook you on the transplant because it really is an easy swap if you have a parts car.

Nutz: Yeah I was keen on that 280, but the seller seemed to get twitchy on the phone when pressed for photos and engine history, and I haven't heard back from him since. I'm now more favouring a 230 replacement for running economy (it's an around town car) and then there are also local Law regs* to be met when modding a vehicle beyond its original state (*I just found out about these). The car would require a rigorous re-certification inspection (total PIA!) The auction for the 190E engine etc. ends in 7 hours...

Good luck on your transplant-- I cannot offer any advice beyond that my brain says that any 2.3 engine should work. It seems like the benzes have A LOT of interchangable/carryover parts from previous generations... and what about that 2.8... did it not span from like, the finnies to the 124? My logic says that an early w201 2.3 should fit a w123 with not a great deal of fuss... but what do I know? =P

shrimpton Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Engine transplant advice.. Cheers iNeon - I'm twitchy about all the baggage bits ie: air conditioning, computer connections, hoses etc. that the upgrade might entail. I know that an older 230 engine would be a doddle, but other than junkers a good one is a rarity down this way - without having to buy the whole car.

iNeon Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Engine transplant advice.. Try to find a w123 230e in the US sometime;) I'd love one! Smoother than the 240, cheaper fuel(whodda thunk it?) and lots extra power to boot. What is the consumption like on a 2.3 rwd? in fwd it'd be darn near 30-32mpg with an automatic, a 5 speed would only seal the deal if I ever saw one.

Just some engine numbers on the W201 M102 1984 M102.961 1985-1993 M102.985 I'm sure you can get the engine to work but the fuel injection system is different along with some other things which I'm not sure about. What is the engine number on your 230CE ? Hope it's not too late .

I'm not sure if this is the engine number - 101576 ( ex- the stamped plate by the bonnet catch). The auction ends in 12 minutes - I'm still sole bidder (reserve not met) so my options are still open. shrimpton Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Engine transplant advice.. The auction closed with reserve not met. I've phoned the seller - left a message for him to call me. I'll just try and negotiate a price to buy it, and sort out the transplant after that. I know what you mean - I have found (any) forum info. on the 230 very hard to come by, whereas the 280 and diesels are well covered. There was a site called W123 world, but it too was not very helpful. With the 230 in mind, is there anywhere you can recommend?.

shrimpton Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Engine transplant advice.. Aah...BUM!...Just got this: Hi Dennis Im sending you this email because I am at work pulling motor out of my car with dad (and have left my cell at home). Dad has pulled some of the bits and pieces off the engine so we could get it out when he noticed staining on the side of the head, so he has shot home to get his head gasket tester as he thinks it might have a cracked head and I wont sell it like that. I will ring you on your cell tomorrow morning to tell you the result.
