OM636 pre-chambers

A friend of mine took cyl head off his 180D ( OM636 ) engine and the prechambers all stick out by varying amts from cylinder head surface ( 0 -3 mm! ) It appears that some are worn. Furthur 2 cylinder have damage to the tops where it looks like there has been some foreign material which has been flying arround in the engine. Ant thoughts?

RE: OM636 pre-chambers

My thoughts – the engine was abused, perhaps starting fluid was used at one point. Also diesel mixed with gasoline or kerosene to keep it from gelling could do this. What’s the carbon build up like? Excessive carbon can cause uneven heating damaging the prechambers. Using the wrong glow plugs or installing them incorrectly can cause this.

These engines are extremely strong but if abused can be turned into junk.
