jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: POLL : Whats EXACTLY the Best Diesel Benz Automobile ? That’s a great choice. Remember they were produced only in 86 and 87 so good examples are becoming harder to find.

I love the W116..its feel and ride are incredible....if only it wasn't plagued with the Dreaded ACC and a propensity to rust. Luckily mine was a desert car and remains rust free to this day.

KylePavao Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: POLL : Whats EXACTLY the Best Diesel Benz Automobile ? I'll leave the 603's alone. Aluminum head on an engine with a 20:1 compression ratio...what about reliability? Aluminum heads mated with a block of a different metal are inherently going to have more problems than an all cast iron engine. The ways each metal disperse heat, expand and contract. I haven't heard of many head gasket problems on the 616's or 617's... Call the manuall adjusted valves old, stupid technology, but the valvetrain in my 376,000 miles 240D didn't tick or anything, and thats with an original head and valvetrain. I love the 603's, don't get more wrong, a very refined diesel engine. But in my opinion, they are in no way as rugged or as robust as the 617's and 616's that preceded them. I also believe that you can't run an 603 with the battery dead, or with the who electrical system shorted out, because of computer controls I believe. If we want to get into the nitty gritty, an engine that is solely mechanically controlled is inherently more reliable than one that isn't.
