Air Con fan driving me nuts.

The fan in my aircon is not working. Well sometimes it is. I opened it up under the bonnet/hood the other day and sprayed a bunch of CRC down the top of what I guess was the motor which looked a bit rusted in the centre. The fan spins freely when I move it with my hands in a smooth motion but if feels a little stiff like there is a bit of resistence, this leads me to think that it is an electrical problem. The fan works sometimes but not as powerful as it should be. The fan for the rear climate control works perfectly.

Thanks for any help

RE: Air Con fan driving me nuts.

Electrical problems would not be surprising for the W140. It was very advanced for it's time, and is still a pretty advanced car.

Sorry NZ Benz, I don't have any specific help or advice on this problem, because it has not happened to me.

I'm sorry. Hopefully, we can get some other guys to help out.

It could be a million things. It could be a busted wire, a broken switch, or the motor could be fried. I dunno. But will sort it out. Its not a huge deal I can just wind teh window down and I removed the filter so when the car is moving at high speed there is good air flow and the AC is still cold as ever.

yea. I don't really use my AC, cuz when you do, you get horrible fuel economy, and you get an annoying trickle of water in your garage the next morining.

But still, the AC is very very useful. I hope it doesn't cost you too much NZ Benz.

RE: Air Con fan driving me nuts.

I have a feeling it may be your fan speed controller.

You have a "trickle" of cold air coming through, but you increase fan setting, and nothing happens??

If this is the case, its a preatty easy fix. If my memory serves me, I think the V12uberalles.com had a nice photo DIY step-by-step.

Cheers,
Patrick

RE: Air Con fan driving me nuts.

Thanks for the info G-AMG, but I can't find what you are talking about on that website. I see he changed the pollen filter, I have already been in there and had a stab at the fan and one where he opens up the back of the car. If that is what I must do then my mechanic can do it. I have no idea how I would even get into the ones on the front dash. If you could point me in the direction of a writeup on the front ones that would be great.

Also I have been told bt different people that it could be:

Regulator
blower motor
switches
loose wiring

any ideas

thanks for the help so far

Thanks,

Is that little part all I need? The only reason they were talking about replacing the entire thing is because that is specific to the E class? What are these things worth? thanks.

I had to get a cloth out the other night and wipe the window down

RE: Air Con fan driving me nuts.

I'll have to check my EPC when I get home, but I believe they are cross referenced.

Here's an excerpt "how-to":

You only need the regulator for the W140 series.

Then you will need to get at your blower motor. In your car its mounted under the passenger side dash. Get up under the dash and remove the plastic panels in order to expose the blower assy. There are 4 small bolts/screws that are holding the blower up there. lower the blower out and disconnect the blower regulator harness. Thats it! there are no other electrical connections or wires to disconnect in order to remove the blower motor from the car. The regulator works by induction it is just bolted flush up against a flat smooth spot of the blower motor. Now you have to decide how to modify the new W140 regulator. you can open up the top part of the regulator to get at the wires that are soldered onto it. Its black plastic and hermetically sealed and a pain to open and get at. if you do this ( which is what i did after reading the threads) you will need a soldering iron. You will reuse only the wires and harness of your old unit and connect them to the new regulator. To do this you will cut the wires off of both regulators and solder the wires of your old unit onto the new regulator making sure you solder the same color wire to the same terminal.

After doing this i realised that its a pain in the ass and would not do it again. if you study both regulators before you do any cutting, you will find that 1 or 2 of the wires on the new regulator are the same length and need not be cut or adapted. you could simply slip them out of their respective harness with a very fine screwdriver and insert them into the correcponding slot of your old harness ( pay attenting as the location of the wires in each harness is not the same ). For the other wires ( wich will be too short to make the same swap, i would simply snip them mid way and reconnect as required using electrical crimps or simply twisting the wires together and maybe laying a bead of solder onto them and tape them up with black electrical tape.

In the regulator kit you will receive the regulator, a small cloth and a tube of gue that will help facilitate the induction between the regulator and motor. Clean the flat spot of the motor with the cloth, lay down the gue and screw on the regulator to snug. Reconnect the regulator harness and reinstall the motor.

Hopes this helps.

RE: Air Con fan driving me nuts.

Pat,

Thanks for all the good info, looks like the MB part is about $200+ NZ . I went to my local bosch stockest today and got a bosch regulator for $20 but I think it is the wrong thing next time I will have to go back with a pic of the part in the E class thred. Is there a generic part that you know of?

Thanks.
