Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

Has anyone ever tried something like this for the rear door?

The pictured device is larger than the rim so it wouldn't fit into the wheel hollow.   There are some tanks that are designed to fit into the hollow, but they don't hold enough to be worth it.  I recall them holding 7-9 liters.

RE: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

The way I read it that fits in the tire well after the tire is removed. So are you asking if anyone's considered moving (or ditching) their whole spare tire in favor of a tank mounted where the spare would have normally gone? Or are you asking about a tank to fit in the rim pocket?

For the reasons previously stated the rim pocket isn't too practical. But making ones whole spare tire into a fuel tank does sound intriguing. Imagine the great looks you could get at the filling station when you remove a "spare tire cover", unscrew a cap at the top, and start filling the "tire" with fuel! Of course you'd absolutely HAVE to paint the tank like a tire and weeh just to keep them guessing from a distance. I wouldn't be surprised to get 10 gallons in there too. Interesting for around town use where you're unlikely to need the spare. Off road where a gashed sidewall (or some damage that plugs can't fix) might be more risky leaving the spare behind.

And if you had to move the spare somwhere else to fit the tank, I'd guess it would be more proactical to fit the tank somwhere else and leave the spare where it is. Oh yeah, and if your spare is door mounted, be real careful checking out the weight of the full tank. Not so much of a worry with a swing-out carrier.

Interesting idea!

RE: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

I would like to have it as an insert in the spare wheel.

Just a gallon or two could make a big difference.

On my last trip cross country I took a detour and couldn't find a gas station. I had to go 35 mph to stretch the fuel on a 65 mph road. Made it to a gas station. I needed over 24 gallons. So I was on fumes.

I'm currently using one of these Spare Tire Covers to fit stuff for trips.  It easily holds a 1gallon white gas container along with other tools and jumper cables.  Being a confirmed diesel-head I don't like carrying gasoline inside the vehicle.  The white gas is really for stove fuel, but will function as gasoline in a pinch.

Given my obsession for increasing the range of the G, I'm currently dreaming up a dry-sump arrangement for the existing tank.  This would make use of all of the main tank's 96liters.  The surge tank would dewater the fuel and add an extra gallon or two of capacity.  The surge tank would have it's own, very accurate,  "1-gallon left to burn" sensor.  I'm designing this with an eye towards diesel engines.  The current design might cause fuel temperature problems in Gasoline engines.

Re: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

Why not just add an aux tank inside the frame rails foreward of th rear axle, like some millitary spec G's. Has anyone checked the availability of these aux tanks from our favorite parts dude?

I have tested our Side Rack on a 2500 Miles Baja trip with these two fuel container, each holding 4 Gallons of fuel - red for Gasoline, yellow for diesel and a clear one for water.......
Always made it to a gas station but helped a stranded fellow traveler with a few Gallons.

The rack is easily clamped to the raingutter and held on the bottom with just a strip of velcro to the side moulding

Got a VIN#?  I hadn't heard of a factory aux tank, aside from the kidney tanks above the wheel wells.

RE: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

Maybe Im mistaken, but I thought I had heard someone talking about them before. My impresion is that it sits in the space foreward of the rear axle on the drivers side lengthwise along the driveshaft. If I made that up, I must be going crazy. Karls rack is a very nice option as well!

RE: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

There are several tank designs for that space.  Some are outrageously expensive ~1700EUR+shipping.  Others I'm not too comfortable with the engineering.

One of my complaints about the factory tank is that the center mounted pickup tube can run dry on relatively tame side slopes.  By constantly filling a surge tank and having the motor run off of the surge tank this problem is eliminated.  The extra few gallons is a nice benefit.

I have run out of fuel before. You need at least two gallons to fill the lines and start the engine again. A single gallon is not enough.

Re: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

$495! Wow. I'll sell one for $400

The AdBlue tank sits between the frame rails and could be run as a supplemental tank in a non-Bluetec G

RE: Aux Spare Tire Fuel Tank

Not sure on the exact volume. I have read 7.5 gallons for the GL350 tank, but it is a different shape.
Here is a G350 tank on eBay
