Oil consumption problems... more answers emerge

OK there's a new Alldata bulletin regarding this.
I'll be adding it to the sticky shortly.

Information within the bulletin tells us that...

1. Only Engines with serial numbers up to 272 9xx 30 05875 are affected
2. In Feb 2005 a modified piston ring set was introduced in the manufacturing process, so i guess cars built after that date should not have problems!

Ianx:

Thank you for the additional information. My new
engine is supposedly crossing the ocean. I had
a December '04 build date and 1 1/2 quarts of oil
consumed in 1700 miles.

I am convinced that your detective work resulted in
my being able to successfully "negotiate" (strongarm)
MB.

Interesting. How do I find out the part number of the engine installed in my car ? Is there like an engraving on the engine block itself or is it in the car´s papers ?

Not that the consumption of oil in my car is out of limits but it´s still I need to refill about 1 litre each 5.000km which seems to be O.K. Surprisingly the CLS 350 which we also have in our family didn´t need any oil refill at all, even when driving at high revs or short distances with a lot of urban driving.

I´m always worried that increasing consumption might be a sign for a developing engine damage.

Andy

Let us know when the new engine is installed.

Andy, i've seen my cars various serial numbers somewhere -
off the top of my head, i think you may find the Transmission serial # and engine serial # of your car on its Certificate of Conformity (all EU cars come with one of these) Its a piece of paper in a A5 yellow folder (labelled EWG-ubereinstimmungsbescheinigung)

item 21. gives the engine type if i recall.

your dealer can also check the serial numbers via the cars unique datacard on the MB database.
however i think i might have seen the serial numbers in the hidden menu that is brought up on the multifunction display when you disable ESP.

Whilst trying to find my certificate of conformity, i just spotted my Engine Serial number on an invoice (rechnung)

my SLK350 is from September 2004, however the engine serial is 272 963 30 009119
thats more digits than the bulletin has!
maybe US cars have a different serial numbering schema! like they do with chassis numbers!

The engine number is located towards the transmission at the back end. Page 436 on 2006 US owner's manual.

Ianx, you have a zero missing/misplaced. Look at the bulletin again. The last five numbers are ....58705 and not ...05875. (In effect the first 58,705 engines built)

You can ignore the leading digits. If the last 5 numbers of your engine are a number less than 58705, your engine is affected. Mine is 16114, so it is affected, supposedly. But I drove the out of it from day one, so I had no problems with oil consumption. After 12,000 km I still have the same oil in the engine, never added to it, and it does not appear to have moved on the dipstick.

cheers

Ianx, see my other response. Your engine is affected, as is mine. This all fits - your Sep04 engine was number 9119 to be built, my Nov04 was number 16114 to be built.

I couldn't find mine listed in the invoice for US cars. The engine number is engraved and located in the rear of the engine as it joins the transmission casing on the right side of the vehicle. You will need a flashlight. Mine has the following no. 272 942 30 317 328.
