500 GE Radiator Cap

Part number: W1245000406

Just came in.

I am going to change out the thermostat and gasket this weekend.

The truck appears to be running just below 100 on the water temp gauge. Would like to see it at around 90 or so.

Starting with thermostat and radiator cap. Coolant is very clean, so is overflow tank.

Re: 500 GE Radiator Cap

May 2017 update:

I changed the Visco Clutch / Fan Clutch and Radiator and temps came back down within operating range.

Recently, during long periods of idling in traffic, I would notice temperature creep up to just below 100 Celsius.

I changed the coolant / water temperature sensor after I used a thermometer to measure coolant temperature in the coolant overflow tank and only noticed a temp of 186 Fahrenheit being reported (quite low in the overflow tank).

Most recently found out that one of my electric fans / auxiliary fans was operating only intermittently.

Replaced both fans. Back dow to 85-90 Degree Celsius water temperature based on instrument indication.

NOTE:

Thermostat and Radiator Cap should be changed EVERY TWO YEARS per MB!!!

Thanks for the Follow-Up! It's nice when folks actually report back on the results of their repairs/problems.

Hmmmm, You sure you don't mean Change 'COOLANT FLUID' every two years??

AND the cap AND the thermostat!

It was recently discussed at length in THE STAR magazine for MB Club of America!

My cap that I bought in 2012 was no longer holding pressure correctly. I would shut off the motor and would look at my lower radiator hose and it would appear to be partially collapsed. Replaced cap and now all is normal.

Re: 500 GE Radiator Cap

This is a good read on classic MB cooling systems:

Re: 500 GE Radiator Cap

I've never heard of MB saying that the expansion tank cap should be replaced every two years -- only that the coolant should be replaced every 2-3 years. Same with thermostats - never heard a factory recommendation that they should be replaced that often.

Generally a thermostat (and cap) will last 5-10 years, no problem. Only go with Behr or Wahler thermostats (aftermarket brands) or with a factory MB 'stat.

Only factory expansion tank caps. They are cheap.

Re: 500 GE Radiator Cap

Again, there is nothing specified in MB maintenance literature that states that expansion tank caps should be replaced every two years. It does have a coolant change interval spec, as well as other maintenance items, but nothing on expansion tank caps. I also have not seen a gasoline or diesel tank cap replacement interval.

The quoted article is one MB shop owner's opinion, but it is not specifically based on any hard information published by MB/MBUSA about replacement of this cap.
