I am also a diehard Toyota 4wd owner, old 4Runner's and Land Cruisers. The G has been on my list of favorite offroad vehicles and I excited to own one, the Unimog and Penz is among the top 3. We actual rescued the G Wagen from wasting away behind a body shop in Walhalla, SC, found by accident a few weeks ago. Called the body shop and they gave me the owners number, went to look at it the following weekend and bought the a couple days after. He has bought from his brother who brought back from Germany in the early 90s, it has been federalized and was tagged in SC for it's entire time in the US. It had been sitting for 2.5 years but with a little work I got it started and actual drove it on my trailer. Overall it is good shape but does have some rust in the normal area but to bad, has a working aftermarket AC system, and a stack of receipts for all maintenance (including a Engine rebuild in 1999). I am trying to figure out how to operate some of the switches and the diff locks. The 4wd does work, I tested it and crawled up some railroad cross ties with ease. Can't wait to get it completely road and trail worthy. https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1380541_10201868984... https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1395238_10201868887... https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1148892_10201... https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/484765_102018689864... https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1377419_10201868986...

It had a little less then a half a tank of old gas and was running good so I figured some some fresh 93 octane would help. I found the Mercedes Owners manual in the glove box, I didn't even look in the glove box when we picked it up on Sun. I was glad too because I was a little confused with the operation of the heater and what some of the knobs, levers, and switches were for. The G has a PTO and it works but I can't get the Diff Locks to engage. Also the dash lights aren't working, while driving the head lights seemed go dime a couple of times.

These two items will save you hours of grief in the future.
