Re: New G320 owner - gerryvz in Houston

I'm in Europe for my annual holiday and spending a few days right off the bat with a close friend & MB collector who lives just outside of Freising, just north of Munich. Here are a few views of his 1990 300GE, which he has owned for about 15 years. It has 265,000km on the clock and he uses it for vacations up in the alps and to places they go like Finland.

It's an M103 engine with a five-speed manual transmission.

He's getting ready to install a new M103 in it, which has been heavily tweaked by being bored and stroked to 3.6 liters using a crankshaft from an OM603 diesel and BMW 140mm connecting rods, which were machined a bit for new MB crank bearings. We are actually picking up the rebuilt motor in nearby Pfaffenhofen on Monday and it will be installed in the G later this summer..

Enjoy!
Cheers,
Gerry

Nice truck! I wish I had never let my 5 speed 300 go.... The 3.6 should be an excellent compliment.

This is REALLY fortunate that Gerry is joining us. I have learned a lot from his M117 posts on his 500E forum.

Welcome, Gerry. Great truck!!!!!!!!

Re: New G320 owner - gerryvz in Houston

Just a note to say that we had a certain natural weather event a few days ago here in Houston. Very very fortunately my G320 came out unscathed, but it was very very close to getting flooded (along with my other cars). On Tuesday afternoon of this week, as the storm was passing, I was able to venture out in my G for the first time. Unfortunately the roads in two of three directions were impassable due to water over the roadway.

Here is a photo of one of the roads, with 8-10 feet of water over the road. The water had receded by Wednesday mid-day, fortunately.

It has been a pretty large disaster here. 9 trillion gallons of water dumped; 500,000 cars flooded; 30+ people dead (and the total is growing); and they are estimating in excess of $100 billion in total damages (Hurricane Katrina is ~$35 billion).

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: New G320 owner - gerryvz in Houston

It is testimony to where you live that you can say 500 000 cars flooded and 30+ people dead. In other places with a disaster of this magnitude, there would be 30 cars flooded and 500 000 + people dead.

I am not trivialising either scenario, just comparing, and marvelling that the loss in Houston is mainly material. And material can be replaced.

God bless you guys.

Re: New G320 owner - gerryvz in Houston

Here is the more extensive message I sent my work colleagues on Thursday morning:

From: Gerry Van Zandt
Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2017 11:03 AM
Subject: An update from waterlogged Houston
Importance: Low

I am just now getting back on-line after the human tragedy that has been Hurricane+Tropical Storm Harvey. Officially in my local area we had about 46 inches of water, but other areas received 60+ inches (despite what the news media reports say). That is 4-5 feet of standing water.

The amount of human suffering and property damage throughout the entire South Texas coast and Houston-Galveston metro area is staggering, and it is continuing as waters continue to rise in some areas of Houston even today. A local ammonia plant not far from me is suffering massive explosions this morning. This has been the worst natural disaster that has ever struck the USA in its history, even dwarfing the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.

Judging by the length of time it took New Orleans to recover from Katrina, and the much greater extent of damage to Texas and Houston, I expect it will be a 10+ year process for a full recovery. But Texas WILL recover.

One thing I must say, having grown up and lived in all three West Coast states, is that Texas is a different place. There is an indomitable, independent and highly selfless spirit among the people here to help their fellow man in times of need. It doesn’t matter what color your skin is, what your political beliefs are, where you came from. People step up big-time and give whatever they have to help others. Over the past 5 days I’ve been on both the giving to and receiving end of others’ assistance, and it has been an amazing experience to both help other people who were in real danger and need, and to be helped by people I don’t even know and can never thank.

Monday morning started at 6:30 AM with me working as normal. Until a loud knock on the door by a neighbor at 8:30 AM alerted us to the rapid rising waters outside. We had less than 2 hours after that to get out before the floodwaters overtook us. In the face of this, you make decisions and take actions based on survival and doing the best you can to preserve what you have and help others do the same. It was a scary feeling having to evacuate and only having one hurriedly packed duffel bag each – and honestly not knowing where we would go, or where we would be spending that night.

We survived, and had much less property damage and loss than people even 300 yards from us had. When I returned yesterday I fell down on my knees in thanks as to how little we lost. We are truly among the most fortunate people. Just a few hundred yards from where I type this, there are dozens of homes whose owners are piling soggy drywall, furniture, baseboards, cabinetry and appliances on the curbs outside of their waterlogged homes as they begin the first steps toward rebuilding their lives.

Sincere thanks to each one of you who have reached out to me over the past 4-5 days with good wishes, and my apologies for not being able to respond to you as I got your messages. Starting this afternoon and through the weekend, Laura and I will be volunteering and paying it forward to others in our community.

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry, glad you are safe and you were fortunate to be on high ground. My niece lives in Spring and she was fortunate as well.

Such a tragedy for so many. Nice to hear that its bringing out the best in people - true colors are generally revealed in times like this.
