minim Member Date registered: Nov 2011 Location: Vehicle(s): Posts: 10 | Mercedes propeller shaft dimensions I'm converting my 463 with a 350 (OM603) engine to a 300 (OM606.962 from W210) and I was wondering what length I need for the propeller shaft. It doesn't look like it's easy to shorten the stock propeller shaft. From what I've been able to find in EPC the 463 with stock OM606.964 engine has a propeller shaft with this A4634100502 partnumber and my 463 with stock om603 has this A4634100202 part number. I cannot seem to find info about different lenght and it also looks like it's only possible to buy complete prop shaft instead of one without the CV-joints so I can reuse the one I got. Does anyone know what lenght I need and if it's possible to fetch only the prop shaft without CV-joints?

Do they have shops like that in Norway?

I did measure the distance from the back of the output flange to the end of the gearbox towards engine on OM603+722.3 to 62cm and the OM606+722.6 was 64cm. It is possible that there is enough movement inside the stock shaft that I can re-use it.. I hope so if not it's going to be one expensive drive shaft added to the rebuild total cost

If you look at page 22 to 25 in this document most of the Geländewagen axles are documentet with lenght http://www.powertrain.no/images/pt.mellomaksler.pdf

minim Member Date registered: Nov 2011 Location: Vehicle(s): Posts: 10 | Re: Mercedes propeller shaft dimensions I spoke with GKN and they could not shorten the one I had but they could make me a new one for 4500nok+25%vat (just shaft, not cvjoints as they didn't have any to sell). However I was at another driveshaft shop today that said my CV joints was to worn for it to be worth it to replace just the shaft so I guess I'm looking for a complete new shaft with the part number A463 410 05 02 that is 237mm long. Any ideas where I could source one? Worldwide is fine really since it seems hard to find one here. Edited by minim 8/14/2015 10:17 AM

I contacted them asking if it's possible to remove German VAT so I don't have to pay double VAT Still gonna cost 1600 Euro shipped to Norway but buying a new one is a lot safer than paying 750 Euro for a used one with unknown condition. I guess used ones can be pretty worn also since this is a forgotten spot to lubricate. It sits really tight up there with bad access to lubricate it. I have opened two of these on 463 and both have had stiff/hard/old grease that should have been replaced years ago. Will do some measurements and see if a custom shop can make one at a better price. 1600Euro for a 23cm long axle is brutal :P Edited by minim 8/14/2015 1:07 PM

I am awaiting for a flange from Germany (8 hole old type) for my TC. Once I have that and fabricated the Gearbox flange I woill know what size I need. I am stil waiting for a response on our local forum if I can get a short one but if that faile I will also have one made up. It will be as the old ones ie. no CV's. If you want I can find out what it would cost for yours as well. Could be worth your while since our currency is dropping in value fast. ReGards, Alan.

I guess a stock one was my best alternative anyways. CV Joints can be replaced but according to the seller it had been opened, inspected and relubricated by them so should be good.
