If anyone could give me a good list of stuff to look for before I make an offer that would be awesome! I've already got a small list. - Wiring harness degradation - Rust under seats - Rust on back door - Suspension - Ball joints - Make sure all diffs turn on and off - Any engine noises, leaks etc...

At that mileage they should still be snug. If they are loose, then replacing them (can/should not be tightened) is an expensive proposition as other parts in the front axle (CV joints, boots, king pin bearings) should be addressed while the are accessible. AC can be expensive to repair.

For the Wheel bearings, how can I check those without taking the wheels off? Edited by Jamez667 5/26/2016 2:34 PM

There should be no knocking or clunking sounds coming from the axle or hubs.

Sunroof parts are expensive. If vehicle has Webasto heater unit, check for proper operation. Transmission slippage ? Check for motor proper operating temps at various conditions (city driving/up hills). The M104 is know to have a problem with head gaskets from the factory with failure common from at 50k-100k miles, and a lot of vehicles on the road have undergone replacement at some point with the more improved gaskets from Mercedes and generally once repaired you do not have to worry again about a head gasket leak. Another common leak is oil leaking from the timing case seal/gasket at the front of the motor. Google "m104 oil leaks" or "m104 head gasket" Example of costs (USD) if above items not working: A/C condenser = 800.00 A/C pump = 400.00 Sunroof rails etc = 1000.00 Wiring harness = 900.00 Timing cover seal = 6.00 (labor to do repair could be 300.00 or so) Transmission rebuild = 2200.00 Head Gasket replacement = 2000.00

Few years ago I imported a G320 from Japan for myself. So here are my $0.02: the odometer shouldnt be rolled back, ask the importer to show you the original importation papers, the mileage should be there; if from Japan there should be no or very little rust - my truck was rust free after 3 Canadian winters; the degrading wiring harness was probably replaced - mine was.

Look out for rust around the sunroof and bottom of windscreen. Give the frame a close inspection on the 4 middel body mounts and the spring consoles / shock mounts, both front and rear. Have a look inside the two rear cross tubes. They can be terribly rotten, if you get the wrong one. Japan should be good. Much better than the rest

I am importing a SWB 1995 G320 to US from Germany right now and it is at an RI in California getting converted to US DOT spec. You hit on the majors already, especially the wiring harness. Good info above for me as well.

Look here: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2... Yahoo is the most active auction site in Japan. Look for mispricing but the risk you get is the vehicle is unknown. The "shaken" (pronounce sha - ken) is the safety inspection which is strict like German Tuv. On older vehicles, it is every 2 years and awful expensive. This is reason for japanese to buy new cars every 3/5 years. I think it is a minimum risk to buy a vehicle unknown. The lower price is the FOB price. My friend can arrange for a fee since he is in the biz. He can scour the regular auctions also but u need to have $$ ready to buy. Once landed in Vancouver, DIY importing yourself. If you want a GTR, he has a few. My to do list from him is a G diesel LHD and '02 GTR V-Spec II Nur. Edited by autonovice 5/30/2016 12:28 AM

But I had mine shipped to Halifax, so the transportation cost was higher. Than I had to pay all the taxes and after all it cost me more than $8K until registered on my name. Never regreted doing it though, those were money well spent. And I was not in a rush, although it didnt took that long to arrive. As I said earlier - I was impressed, and still am of the quality and maintenance of the vehicle. The most important - there was not a spec of rust anywhere, and after 4 Canadian winters it is still rust free. If I need to buy another one - I wouldnt hesitate a second and will go same route. But for now I am well set - look at my profile

First thing im going to do is get the undercarriage sprayed down with rust inhibitor and undercoating, should help keep the road salt off and dampen some noise.

All of these coating fail over time. When the coating starts to become porous after a few years, the water has a hard time getting under the surface as intended, but one moisture penetrates, it becomes impossible for the layer under the surface to dry out or "breathe". Rust inhibitor or waxoyl should be fine

Be careful of anything that you have been told by anyone at Velocity. Make sure you verify everything with a trusted mechanic with significant G experience. Why? Been there. Even a couple of inspections by the local mercedes mechanics did not catch the cracked exhaust manifold on the G320 I purchased from them last year. And the AC that Velocity "repaired" turned out to be a temporary fix....So...Caveat emptor. These guys will say anything to sell a vehicle.
