Glad you found what you are looking for.  I forgot I had photos of that part of motor.  Here is another for reference if needed.

RE: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

Morning all,

Quick update on progress. (Our work weeks in the Middle East run from Sunday to Thursday, so the weekend is over for me... the wife and friends wanted to go camping so progress was minimal.)

G arrived and got a thorough wash, then another one, then another one. It's still filthy. It then got washed inside (which did a nice job of making it smell nice and clean and revealed that the floors are in great condition.)

I went over the engine with the mechanic, there are a LOT of parts that are shared between the M117 and the M110 so I will start to cannibalize the M117 this evening of things like HT leads, fuel line clips, vacuum hoses, thermo switches OE hose clamps etc.

It turns out that you can't get good auto upholstery carpet here... I'm heading back to South Africa for Christmas so I will bring some back, in the mean time some HD office carpet has been cut and trimmed and will be used as a stop gap until propper carpet can be installed.

The only front seats I could find with a narrow enough track where from a small Nissan pickup, Im NOT happy with them, even when they are covered they look wrong. So I need to go back on the hunt for some appropriate front seats. (we don't have old cars here so I can't go and scavenge some from a W123 etc. All the newer merc seats are electric and too wide)

Only a few pictures.

Late night work on the engine

Washed, washed and washed again...

Crappy carpets in.

... and a few camping photos (as this is what the G will be built for!) Right now we camp with a 100 series V8 LandCruiser.

I see you've changed the steering wheel already to the older style.

Re: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

The guy I bought the truck from had changed the steering wheel to the newer style, the original one was in the trunk. I like the classic style, and I have the original Mercedes badge to go in it but it is bigger so I have to see which one works out better.

My next challenge is going to be the fenders, they have been damaged over time and the PO looks like he used bondo to glue them back together and then painted them. I'm going to strip them off, block sand them down until I get to a smooth surface and then see what kind of repair work can be done. I have plastic repair / epoxy and can shoot them with a good flexible primer and bumper paint if I can just get the cracks sorted out. The truck will fail our local roadworthy inspection for anything that looks like accident damage.

Rears are ok:

Fronts need work:

Wheels and studs are not Gwagen factory original either.

Re: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

No they are not. The PO put 1.5" spacers on and the spacers have changed the bolt pattern from Mercedes to Toyota spacing. The wheels are stock Toyota Land cruiser wheels. They will be swapped out for some propper rims at a later date.... but right now it's several hundred dollars that needs to go elsewhere.

This does not look too bad:

I think ill pull the lights and bumper and hit it with a wire wheel to get it down to bare metal, then primer until she is ready for a full paint job.

Re: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

I sanded the front fenders last night to see what was going on with the cracks, turns out they had obviously cracked before and someone has splined them with some steel plate and rivets and then filled in the mess with bondo.

I am going to try to sand off as much bondo as possible, fix and splint the cracks with alu backing plate and then fix the cracks with epox. Hopefully that will be strong enough and yield a good enough surface to paint.

Re: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

You know you may just have a very desirable transfer case on this G. The data card refers to a cable winch, which was normally driven by a seperate PTO off the transfer case. If so it is ultra rare.

RE: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

So this weekends progress was a little slow (it being the wife's birthday )

The back seats went in. If you ever loose your back seats (you never know!) the back seats from a W163 ML320 will fit perfectly in the back of an old G. I had to make a 40mm spacer to go under the front brackets. I chose to make a full false floor out of treated marine ply that will get a nice layer of matching carpet before all the plastics go back on the seats that cover the bracket. In truth they do sit a little high, but it will be fun for passengers in the back to peer down on other motorists and there is more than enough head room for even me at 6'2.
 photo 011_zps14ydwwax.png

It is amazing what you can do with 36 year old paint, some rubbing compound and wax brought the paint back to life. There is unfortunately still a lot of rust that needs to be dealt and some spots where the paint has rubbed too thin to polish up. I have to consult the painters to see if they need to do the full car or just a blend job.
 photo 008_zpsqeclptfs.png

I sheared a fuel line nipple going to the WUR so that put a halt on engine progress
 photo 013_zpsv28ejrwi.png

The clutch pressure plate got some elbow grease and should be usable, the clutch was in good nick.
 photo 009_zpskprtlrqe.png

The hoses came for the vaccum system but where missing some connectors so where clearly not the correct parts! It seems there must be a version of the 280 that does not use this diaphragm. With the new hoses that came all 3 connections for this diaphragm are missing.
 photo 012_zps9d4tx2a0.png

The dude on the other end of the block now has this in his driveway.

RE: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

Such a great topic, keep up the good work.

Nice to see a m110 going back in. Apart from it's fuel economy it's a great engine. Hope fuel pricing in your area are much much lower than ours

Is the m110 also pre-1984? Than you wouldn't have that 'schubumluftventil', that's discussed in one of the links.

What kind of transmission is installed behind the m110? Would be nice to go with a 5sp/overdrive now you're at it.

Re: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

I have NO idea what a "schubumluftventil" is I'm afraid.

The M110 I have now is out of a Military Spec W641 (early 80's) but I don't know the exact year I'm afraid. The transmission is the stock 4 speed that came with the replacement M110. Finding old merc parts here is very difficult so I will probably have to stick with the 4 speed. This country is 2 hours to any of the boarders so the average freeway trip is 1 hour before you hit the dunes.

Hmmm... how long before bits go "missing" off the 4x4-squared and "appear" on your 460? haha

Check out the K-jetronic links posted earlier in your post and you'll see it's location and function.

If your complete fuel and vacuum system is original and complete, you won't have to worry about it of course. Leave it as is and replace brittle hoses and rubbers and you should be fine.

Re: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

yup, it is complete.

It's just that the houses are in a bad way. The lines have all been replaced but two of the new hoses that came from the dealer did not allow for a diaphragm to be included (picture above the 4x4 squared) iin the system so I have had to temporarily patch the old ones so that I can try get everything off to the engine swap mechanic this weekend.

RE: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

Progress has been worse than slow over the holidays.

It turns out that while the length, diameter and no of turns on Nissan Patrol coils is the same but the internal diameter is off by about 1cm (despite what has been said on other forums) so they do not sit properly on the perches. They also lift the truck to the point that the shocks top out so are not usable.

Spring Comp photo 020_zpsvqb6hmb3.png

The old rear springs that were on the G when I got it are completely wrong (too long and pig-tailed on the top as opposed to flat). Fortunately, there is no damage to the spring perches.

Spring Work photo 019_zpsb82lezst.png

There are two jack stands and an axle stand that have managed to hide themselves perfectly in that picture... don't worry, safety was just as important as shade.

P.S. There is no PTO on my transfer box.

RE: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar

I'm trying to get lots of little bits inspected and sorted before the truck is collected for its engine swap on Saturday.

- Front swivel joints inspected and greased.
- Front and rear breaks inspected and adjusted.
- All of the trim has been pulled off so I can work on it while the truck is away.

2 nights ago a set of 2015 G500 wheels found me for less than $450 with a set of new tires on them. They are not perfect but I was never going to find classic G wheels in Qatar so I jumped a the offer. They need some 285/70/r18 tires so the rim to tire ratio is better and an AT tread so they are more aggressive. They also need to be powder coated satin black. (The front and rear bumpers need to be powdercoated so they will all be done at the same time) Time will tell if 1.25" spacers are needed to line them up with the fenders better, as they currently sit flush with the bodywork.

With all of that done and new springs so she sits at the correct height hopefully they will have an "Edition PUR" look to them...

She looks a bit of a mess at the moment

 photo 002_zpsk1xzq0yp.png

While pulling the old wheels and inspecting the breaks I made a nasty discovery, the front left adapter (that the PO had fitted as spacers and to change the bolt pattern from 1x130 to 1x150) was held on with 2 lugs only

 photo 001_zpsyqevambu.png

The back drums got a good wire brush and light coat of engine enamel as they are now rather visible through the 18' rims.

 photo 003_zpsxjpyw6de.png

Back breaks are not too bad at all, the front disks need to have the surface rust taken off them and to be skimmed, but I ran out of time...oh and I have some relitivley new Sachs shocks on the back wich was a nice discovery.

 photo 004_zpsniq7fgak.png

This was an interesting find. The big M117 V8 must sit a lot lower in the truck than the original inline 6 as the diff has hit the oil pan HARD a few times..

 photo 005_zpsc3mriquu.png

I also have found out that the original engine swap was done in 1979 when the truck was imported into Qatar for the Emir (King). So it's probably the very first G wagon ever brought into the country and has an interesting pedigree

I would rather suspect that you have an oil pan for a different model. Does the V8 come from a sedan? There are a lot of different oil pans for the different sedans and the G is different from all those.
