I would try here first.

https://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?make=Mercedes-Benz&y...

They are 25% discount from MSRP and would most likely have the glass drop shipped direct from the closest MBUSA parts warehouse.

RE: Windshield

Thanks Dutch,

they say " I'm sorry, we cannot ship glass"

But my usual dealer is willing to match the price they quote on their website. Which is clearly less than for example Safelite is asking for a replacement with aftermarket glass.

I had the windshield replaced by Safelit one time, using my insurance. Since then the rain sensor did not work quite right.
But the insurance of course does not allow OEM

So, the Safelite quote is 930 - isch if you pay on your own . When I ran it via the insurance, it suddenly was 502.00 and my deductible is 500.
I hate companies that just ripp of a regular customer.

Bottom line, I rather buy the OEM, do the job myself. It is not hard with that flat sheet. And give me the chance to check the window frame for corrosion

Thanks
Oskar

RE: Windshield

Nothing prevents you from popping out the old glass yourself and treating the frame before they show up.   Then have the installers put in the new glass. Watch them closely,  It is easy to nick the paint under the rubber during the install.

Absolutely insist on a new rubber gasket.  My installers tried to weasel out of that, then claimed that "they never do that", then claimed they couldn't find the gasket, then ..., finally they caved after numerous reminders that the gasket was glued and that it was going to get wrecked when the glass was removed.

Re: Windshield

Oskar, which vehicle are you working on?

If it is the W460? Last time I did my Klunkerwagen's windscreen? I simply Removed the Old Glass, took it to a Glass supplier, and had them cut an exact pattern of tinted AS-2 Glass for a whopping $60 bucks.

Alan, yes.

But I still recall the horror when they did my Audi .. paint scratched, A pillar trim greasy.
Yes, they fixed it, took 2 attempts and every time I had to bring the car to their shop. Had I fight with those folks. I am cured.

Luckily I can do 90% of all the car work myself. Actually, the 463 has not seen a shop besides the 2 times I had to replace the windshield

The gasket is already here :-)

Have fun

Re: Windshield

I pulled into safelite and had insurance pay for my replacement. They ordered an OE Benz unit and I paid deductible. You could try and just have it done at a local shop. Nothing crazy different about our glass installation.

Recently did the 280SE (1972 W108 ) .. that was a bit more of a challenge.
So, I think, I'll do myself. Especially as I now switched to a heated windshield

Need to figure the switch and wiring

The switch is the same as the w124 rear heated window switch in case you have a junk yard near you.

Re: Windshield

A factory windscreen is $250 USD or thereabouts from MB dealer. This is for an early W463 without heated windscreen. This is also the temperature-cool glass that helps with heat dissipation apparently.

Thanks - the part numbers are helpful. I got the windshield and and Seal .. sitting in my garage.

And just FYI, the windshield of my '81 460 took a bad hit. Had lasted for 35 years. Surprisingly the original windshield MB price $250 ... and US stock

RE: Windshield

I am replacing the glass on my G320.

There were a few rust spots under the windshield, so I cut the old gasket and took the truck into a body shop. Luckily no holes in the metal and it all cleaned up really nice. The body shop showed me pics of the bare metal for the full lip and I was able to see it first hand, it was completely solid. The new paint looks great, I think I am going to wait a few days for the warm spell we are having to cure it so that it is less likely to njck or deform during installation of the new glass and gasket.

When I cut the old gasket out, it looked like a thin bead of butyl rubber all the way around. I had to clean it off the metal, but the rubber seal looked unusable (it was cut out to preserve the glass anyways). The new seal has a totally different style of lip or sealing surface.

My plan is to use a bead of butyl rubber in the groove, lube the seal with some WD40 wiped on, install, and then a coupe of days later use the technique of the tile spacers and another kind of sealant under the outermost lip of the rubber as been posted here previously.

Any comments or advice are appreciated.

Re: Windshield

Well, that product is a primer and the metal lip has already been primered and painted.
So at this point I am just looking to prevent water ingress and accumulation

Re: Windshield

I found a little rust on the windshield frame too.  In my case is was where the water could pool in the two outside corners.  Frankly, I'm starting to think the sunroof-drain solution is best.  Drill a hole on each side and fashion a vented drain to the outside.  That way the water can never pool.  Completely filling the void with sealant should work and is certainly easier.

RE: Windshield

The body guy said it looked like the rust had been touched up before. There was nothing obvious to me. It looked like the most affected areas were at the margin of the seal and front of the frame. Most of the nasty windshield rust pictures are a rotted out channel. That was my biggest concern.

Here is how it looked prior to the repaint

Re: Windshield

Master Series is supposedly even better than POR15 according to the real classic car restoration community...better than Rust Bullit, also.
