| steering coupling
Has anyone ever had a steering coupling get loose or go bad?
If you have, are there any symptoms that show prior to failure?
2013-2016 G's have been recalled for couplings not being sufficiently tightened causing steering wear which might cause loss of steering.
If I have no symptoms, can I just torque the bolts and forget it? |

they are not saying yet. And the dealer has no info on it yet.
i think it is the universal joint on the column.

There are two universal joints and they use single use bolts.
I don't know if it is a good idea to re torque single use bolts. |

These steering shafts must have been installed by the same guy who put in the shaft on my 1996. One of those bolts was loose too. You can't miss the effect: the steering system rattles in a way that will drive you nuts. It took a while to isolate the problem to that bolt. Each end of the shaft is a spline fit that is side clamped with a bolt. The actual movement in the joint was nearly imperceptible. The bolt goes through in a way that requires that the bolt be completely removed in order for the spline to come apart. Long before that could happen you would notice the rattle. Just put some loctite on the bolt and crank it down until the joint doesn't rattle. DIY will save you from having something else broken by the lowest guy in the dealer pecking order.

The bottom bolt was loose by a 1/2 turn. This saved me a lot of headaches!  |

A steering coupling connects your steering wheel to the steering box. There is a long shaft from the steering wheel down to the steering box. Of course a coupling is needed to allow angle variations. You've probably seen it a million times but never thought about it. Its the part that haunts me when I do a manual to power steering conversion. |

You can see how far it turned by the geen inspection marks. It either turned 1/2 turn or a turn and 1/2 - not sure but it was loose.
It doesn't take much torque. I believe the spec was under 25nm.
