Window regulator

So I just purchased a g500 and it needs 2 regulators in the back and maybe some work on the passenger front goes up slow.

So oem Mercedes? Or aftermarket. Normally I would go OEM but... the first set of OEM isn't impressive.

It's there any hope in repair? New ones better?
Any reason why they fail.

RE: Window regulator

The window regulators are a major design weakness on the G Class (to the point where I consider them to be a design flaw). There are two primary failure modes - the nylon cable pulleys age, harden, and break, causing the cable to derail or the nylon cable ends crack and "pull through" causing too much cable play which cause the cable to mis-wind on the motor capstan. Keep in mind that the motor unit rarely fails. I and others have repaired them after failure, but it is a bit of an art form.

I believe the new OEM "improved" regulators are slightly different than the original on a G500 and as such, require modification of the door to install. Someone has posted a detailed procedure for how to do this on one of the various G forums (can't remember which). I would give the aftermarket versions that seem be available a try because a Chinese knock off couldn't be any less robust than the OEM unit and you will save a ton of money. A inexpensive used unit might be an option, but keep in mind that the nylon on these is almost as old as the nylon on yours.

As for the slow window, I have found a little white grease on the tracks helps things move betters. Also be sure that the regulator is installed so that it is pushing the glass straight up in the tracks.

Good luck.

RE: Window regulator

if just the nylon cable pulleys and guides are bad, but the cable itself OK .... I made me a few pulleys and guides of stainless steel

Oskar

I remember you posting something about that years ago do you have any updates on how they have held up and some photos?

Though it does not effect my G I am sure others would be interested.

Re: Window regulator

The new OEM regulators have been redesigned and the mount has to be re-drilled to accommodate the new one.
When I owned the 2002 G 500, I had all of the regulators replaced when they failed. After that time, I did not have another failure.
I did try to repair one of the failed regulators and it was not going to happen. The lift wire was too tight to make it possible to repair.

Re: Window regulator

the redesigned window lifters are the way to go
mine have not failed yet and show no signs of weakening
one of the design flaws was that the cable did not ull dead center of the glass
that created a lot of strain in addition to the weak plastic pieces
the motor never fails
you will only need the new lifting assembly (still not cheap)

RE: Window regulator

Here's how to decipher old style window regulator from the new design.

The new design has a larger rivet supporting the pulley and an additional concentric ring added to the plastic pulley.

RE: Window regulator karma

Well, that's what I get for mentioning the window regulators - lost the right front one at German Car Day last Sunday. Nylon pulley snapped at the center line with the window down. I found a decently priced used one which I ordered because I don't have the time right now to repair the old unit. I will do that eventually so that I have a spare for the window.

Re: Window regulator

My passenger front window has stopped working the motor has power when selected in both direction but the window doesn't move to come down.

I guess that must be the regulator somehow jammed up, it has been working perfectly prior to this.

Is it worth stuffing around with it or just order a new regulator.

Re: Window regulator

The pre 2002 window regulators are different to the ones pictured above. They have a long worm drive running in a channel driving a plate attached to the bottom of the window running in a track.

It is a really simple system with little to go wrong, I removed mine today and gave it a good clean up, a good soaking of the worm screw with electrical contact cleaner as it runs dry. You remove the plastic cover at the end, remove the motor then run it throughout the range with a 1/4 drive ratchet. The channel and runner which connects to the window gets cleaned and re-greased and it all goes back together fairly easily.

A couple of hrs in total and it works a treat, I may even do the other side as whilst I am at it to save any grief later on.

Another reason to own a pre 2002 GW.
