Re: 300GD viscous clutch removal

Harald, on mine there are 4 little bolts arranged concentric to the shaft, heads facing backwards, ie towards the engine. IIRC they are M8 but need a 10mm spanner. A bit fiddly and you need to turn the engine to get at them all.

And I might be confused - its late down here - but there might be one variant that has the allen cap screw through the centre. If so it needs a shortened 10 mm wrench, and the head is on the front or radiator side. Wear gloves as the rad makes you bleed.

Whichever one you have, remove the top rad hose and the two top mountings such that you can pull the top of the rad forward for a little more space.

Re: 300GD viscous clutch removal

Harald yours may be the old style pump. Here is a descriptor from Kerry:
You will find a vertical hole in the water pump, and a corresponding hole in the pump shaft.
insert a piece off about 8mm round steel into this to lock it up. do not use an allen key they will break.
then using a 70mm spanner on the 2 flats on the pulley, undo anticlockwise same as normal.
the viscous hub attatches to the pump with a central bolt ,
hope this helps
cheers kerry

RE: 300GD viscous clutch removal

thanks for posting my old comment .
you can plasma cut a spanner . or weld one up from flat plate / flat bar .
lately i have been seeing some adjustables that open very wide ..

best to give the centre bolt a nice soaking of 50/50 acetone atf

RE: 300GD viscous clutch removal

Its been awhile here too on my M110/280GE...not sure if configured same, but it was just 4 screws between fan and pulley.  Here are some photos which may help you remember ?

Also...this writeup from Hans Hehl website will help as it has more photos :

Hopefully you can manage as it is written in German.
