280GE shocks

a few yesars ago, when I was i Germany I thought I am smart and buy some shocks for my ol 460.

NOW - as I want to to put them in - it turns out they do not fit :-(

What kind of schocks are available here in the us for a '81 280GE - does not look like I could get Sachs ones

Thanks
Oskar

Re: 280GE shocks

Bilstein here as they have a lifetime warranty and you can send them to Bilstein of Ca to be revalved for free to suit the way you drive. I had mine done for a stiffer ride.

RE: 280GE shocks

I recently put a new set of Bilstiens on mine. I found them at an online store for a very reasonable price.

how hard do they feel? The B6 Performance type (24-005043/24-005142) ?
I had Bilstein (stock) in my G500 and on our daily washboard it was just a rattle-ride.

Thanks

Re: 280GE shocks

Mine make for a very comfortable ride.

You will need to call them for 280GE shocks. I had purchased my 83 300GD shocks from them as well.

I have been pretty pleased with my ride quality, although I am not sure how much that has to do with shock vs tire size/pressure. I run my 37's at 20-25psi on gravel and the ride is excellent. Unfortunately I don't really have anything to compare them with, because that is what my G had when I bought it, but I haven't been disappointed either.

Here is the place I ordered mine: http://www.eshocks.com/bil_veh.asp?Model_Index=18Q15&Manf=All&SubChar=Q  It would appear that they are the B6 Performance type.

RE: 280GE shocks

Had Bilstein on the 280. Could never go back to that. Maybe ok on tarmac, but terrible on dirt and off-road. Way too stiff. Could not hold the road on bumpy or washboarded dirt track curves because wheels were off the ground half the time. It was not possible to drive slow enough to get them to hook up. I liked the Doetchtech shocks I got from Gelaendekraft many many years ago. They worked great as they were custom valved for the G's spring rates, and axle weights. I had them rebuilt a few times. Now I'm a Koni Heavy Track SPX man. Look up the 460 G part numbers on the Koni site and then order them from Summit Racing if you can't get them from our friendly neighborhood suppliers.

Hi Dave,

great to hear an opinion that matches my expericence.

I found a supplier in Germany for the original Sachs shocks - will take a few days shipping, but the way lower cost makes worth the while. Sometimes I have the feeling when a part ( not only Gwagen ) crosses the ocean it is automatically gold-plated ...

BTW, Jill and I talked about you when when were on our way to Casper for the eclipse .. a meet is overdue :-)

Re: 280GE shocks

Just to chime in, I had a cracked front spring and went for a Sachs on eBay, quite happy with the ride, a fairly cheaper than via MB (I paid EUR 110 for a set):

Noticed Eurotruck carries the HD Sachs shocks for 460 G.

Just to verify, do these have the following PN's?

- Front shock: Sachs PN. 141700123802 / MB PN. A0043237800 ?

- Rear shock: Sachs PN. 141700123932 or Sachs PN. 106 941 / MB PN. 0043260400 ?

Having a little troubling finding out which Sachs shocks should match different type of 460 type vehicles.
