I just replaced some brutally cheap aftermarket HID lights, with a nice set of stock lamps in my 2003 G500. Everything seamed to be working fine, with no errors, until I try the high beams. They light, but won't stay lit, and then I get the error message. Is there a ballast that is supposed to be there? I unplugged all of the aftermarket wire and ballasts, and just plugged the new lights in. What am I missing??? Thanks! R.

They light for about two seconds, and go off of high beam. Holding the lever doesn't fix it. I'll check into the programming, although the HID lights would work, with no errors, they were intermittent and troublesome. Thanks for the help so far! R.

I'll bet it's the coding, and it will probably take a STAR unit to correct it.

Quirk I found in 1985 280GE. Was having similar trouble with intermittent lighting problems and high beams shutting down after a few seconds. I replaced the hazard switch in the dash and everything works perfect. Seems a lot of signal gets routed through these switches and when it starts to expire the light blips may be the indication. Likely why they seem over costly. Mine had spade connections and everywhere I looked there were switches with round posts.

I didn't think that a 2003 could be recoded for HID bulbs - I thought that capability came later. Maybe you have a load resistor still installed somewhere in the high beam circuit? Such a load resistor on the high beam circuit would be required for HID lights if recoding is not possible or not done. A quick (but not necessarily definitive) test for this would be to remove the new stock bulbs, put the High/low beam switch in the High position (do not move to low), start the truck and turn on the headlight switch on the dash. If you do not get a high beam out warning message, there is a load resistor in the circuit somewhere (if even the SAM has been recoded it will still detect the total absence of a bulb if there is no load resistor). If you do get an error, there still could be a resistor, but it is less likely.

I had the troublesome T-case shift motor replaced, as it had popped into neutral while driving, and some other work done. They checked the programming for the lights, and indeed, they were not set properly. Re-coded and ready to roll! I'll run stock bulbs for now, and see if I feel like more headlamp drama in a few months. Thanks for all of the help!!! R. Edited by rman 9/23/2017 9:59 AM
