G,,day .
my knowledge is horizontal is ok .
as long as the front is uppermost .
front being as installed in vehicle .

Thanks Kerry. Mine was packed and shipped with the bimetallic strip up in the box, as shown in ychung's photo; and I think that goes forward towards the radiator when mounted in the truck.

RE: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

G,,day Dutch
my new hub (years ago) was boxed that way and from memory stated this side up .

i refilled my old one through the hole under the bimetalic strip , so if upside down the silicon can gradually seep out .
to access the hole a small pin needs removing .

the refilled one is still on my G and working good .
new one in reserve . in case .

Hi Dutch,

Have you thought of Jonathan at Blue Ridge Mercedes. I understand that he rebuilt a clutch for another member who has a 500GE in Miami.

Hope life is good.

Unfortunately, I have to say I would not recommend Blue Ridge Mercedes. After a suggestion like the one above on this forum, I spoke with them and arranged to ship them my viscous coupler for rebuild. Years and years went by and I could not get them to send it back to me. On a lark, this year I thought I'd send them another email about it and without much information, it returned back to me in the mail. I have no idea if they did actually rebuild it. During the passing years I initially set up an electric fan and then bought a new viscous fan coupler for future.

Be aware that all fan clutches need to be stored vertically not horizontally. I am told by the manufacturer that if stored horizontally (lying down) for any length of time they become unusable.

If that be the case, the manufacturer (Sachs/ZF) needs to be educated to ship them that way. My recently installed Sachs visco fan came shipped direct from ZF (the parent company) horizontally in the box; and I'd be willing to bet that it was stored on their warehouse shelf in that position, too.

I have one on my shelf that I bought for future needs. Having read the above on this forum in the past I paid close attention to the labeling on the box, which clearly indicates flat, with one side up (haven't opened it, but trusting the arrows).
