Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

My G500 has been running hotter than normal. I discovered that with the engine running fully warmed, and actually a bit hotter than normal, I can stop the coolant fan with my gloved hand.

Looks like I need a new visco clutch. MSRP US$510.00 plus labor, since I don't have the tools or time to do it. Ouch!

Re: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

Hi Dutch,

Have you thought of Jonathan at Blue Ridge Mercedes. I understand that he rebuilt a clutch for another member who has a 500GE in Miami.

Hope life is good.

Thanks. I'm not big on rebuilds.

Yes. It looks like it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or tools to do it myself. Thanks for the good idea, though.

This Sachs Visco Fan Clutch is a direct drop in plug and play replacement for the factory fan clutch at a fraction of the MB boxed replacement part price.

Fwiw, the factory clutch was also a Sachs clutch.

As another heads up, the KD Tools KDT3472 3 pc Fan Clutch Wrench Kit is the perfect tool for the job. It is far stronger than the MB tool, also at a fraction of the price.

You could always just bend the tabs down for a short term fix

Requires dismounting the assembly and removal of the fan blade from the clutch for access. Might just as well replace it.

RE: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

I drilled and refilled mine years ago. Still working great, and a refill now takes 2 minutes (once removed from engine).

Re: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

I just replaced mine recently.

Found one for $400 shipped (Original Sachs unit). The one in the truck seized up on me , running 10c hotter and making a high pitched whine above 4,000 RPM's. It is an easy replacement - Used a special wrench and all it needed was a good whack and the clutch fan bolt came loose without any issues

Ouch! Mine was $272 delivered. It, too, is a Sachs.

Re: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

I lied, mine was the same price but I ordered some other small parts, totaling $400.

After a few weeks after install into the "hotter" Fall season, temps are steady!

RE: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

Hi,
I've just bought the new fan clutch by Sachs, but it has some sort of corrosion in the middle section.
Is this the norm or do I need a replacement?
Also, does anyone have the fan clutch replacement instruction or is it going be self explanatory?
Thank you

The corrosion is normal. You will need the tool mentioned previously in this thread to make the job easy.

Re: Coolant Fan Visco Clutch

Be aware that all fan clutches need to be stored vertically not horizontally. I am told by the manufacturer that if stored horizontally (lying down) for any length of time they become unusable.

If that be the case, the manufacturer (Sachs/ZF) needs to be educated to ship them that way. My recently installed Sachs visco fan came shipped direct from ZF (the parent company) horizontally in the box; and I'd be willing to bet that it was stored on their warehouse shelf in that position, too.
