Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

ok.. strange situation.

I have a 2003 g55 with 70K miles on it. We had a cold spell come through where temperatures got to -40 degree celcius. Here is what started to happen:

1. whining noise on accel and decel, more apparent between 20 and 50 mph.
2. grumbling noise and vibration on initial acceleration.
3. After 2 hours driving on the highway I experience heavy vibration at around 60mph.

I've recently changed the diff fluids and I've lubbed up the driveshafts as well.

Im thinking this could be a worn pinion bearing but is that even common on these trucks?

thanks for the help guys, I know this is a tough issue to diag.

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Have you ever serviced your homokinetic drive shaft? (Short propeller shaft between the transmission and transfer case).

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

The center drive shaft has a CV joint on either end. The grease dries out and needs renewal. There is a write up on the DIY section.

Other option is to just wait until your vibes get worse and replace the shaft like I had too.

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Maybe the heavy vibration is from the driveshaft itself? Had to replace my front driveshaft recently (@340.000 km.)

It was troubleshooted by removing the driveshaft and do a drive with the center diff.lock engaged.

RE: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

It does sound like the centre shaft, mine went bad in a hurry.

Put the car in neutral and get underneath and try to rotate the shaft there should be next to no play, if it clonks at one or both ends that is probably it.

With the cold temps the grease may have been to solid to lubricate properly especially as it maybe hard if it has never been replaced before.

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

thanks guys, the weather is warmer. I changed the fluid, the fluid that came out was super thick and nasty looking. I've since put new fluid in, let me see if I can figure out whats wrong with the center shaft.

thank you

Which fluid? Diffs? TC?

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Sorry diff fluid, I want to say I put in a 0 weight limited slip fluid in error and it turned to sludge. It was -40 out here and Im not sure if that had anything to do with the issues Im having. As mentioned I changed all the fluids in the diff and the whine is still present. Upon initial acceleration there is a small amount of vibration as well.

You do NOT want a limited slip fluid in there. You want 75W90 or 80W90 GL-5 Gear Oil.

If what you drained out had turned to sludge, it will almost certainly have not completely drained out. You might want to run it a little while, drain again and refill with the right oil just to be sure you got all the wrong stuff out.

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Buy some Amsoil Severe Gear. You will be very happy. You will feel an immediate difference in reduced rolling resistance, too.

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Will it reduce my whine? By remove the diff cover will it be obvious if I have any signs of wear?

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Drain the fluid and inspect it visually.....let us know what it looks like and if you see anomalies like metal shavings.

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Thanks guys,
Put the truck on the hoist and put it in drive, did not hear any whine. It seems it only happens under load. Does this help offer anyone an idea on whats going on? I may have to bite the bullet and take it to a transmission shop to have them do further diag. Would someone putting viscous coupling fluid in by accident cause differential failure?

Others have mentioned center prop shaft rebuild, there is a little play but Im not sure whats acceptable.

thanks guys

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

oK, looks like the noise is from the transfer case, what bearings fail in these? Has anyone had this happen before?

Re: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

How did you determine the noise is coming from the transfer case?

If it is the tcase and there is no noise without load then perhaps it suggests the center differential.

RE: Strange whining noise on Decell and vibration

Listening very very carefully, pulled the t case apart and this is what we found.

The bearing was shot! Crazy that it didn't grenade the t case.
