1994 G320 (VG150 non-electronic) won't shift into high-range

I've been driving my G320 all week with lots of smiles all around. Tonight I parked it outside the garage to move some things around. I tried pulling it into the garage a few hours later and it won't stay in high range. Even if I hold the shifter there the gears just grind. It is like the lever won't go all the way back. I tried jamming it in while in neutral with no change. It will stay in low range, but that would make for a painful commute

I had a problem a couple of years ago where the lever was stuck in high-range. I unbound the driveline and whacked on the t-case shifter several times to free it and haven't had an issue since then. Crawling under it, the t-case doesn't appear to have shifted.

Thoughts? Is there something internal that could be wrong? I don't think my rear-seat passenger kicked it, and even if he had that would bend the lever forward making low-range difficult, not high.

What is weird is that the lever won't even move back into high range. It moves between low-range and almost into high-range as it always has. I wonder if the detent was somehow damaged.

I drained the fluid (~10k miles) and it is light gray and there is some fuzz on the magnet, but not enough to be alarming to me.

unbound the driveline?
the VG150 is a fulltime 4WD transfer case no binding possible
unless you used your center diff lock on pavement

Is your trans in neutral when you are attempting to shift?

Yes, transmission is in neutral, the center diff wasn't locked on pavement, and we don't have dyno emissions tests here for AWD vehicles. I'm planning to pull the t-case on Thursday. I'll let you all know what I can find.
