However as I was returning to the asphalt the rear diff refused to un lock . I drove front to back numerous times both in gear and out driving slowly and relatively fast,& exercising the lock switches, all to no avail. I was getting concerned that if I drove on pavement what damage would I do to the diff. Finally after what seemed an interminable time it un locked . I would guess it actually took 3 or 4 minuets. What do you folks think might be the problem? Is there a problem? Thanks in advance, Jack

A moderate turn in either direction usually makes the process fairly quick. The front locker works similarly. A turn in either direction followed by releasing pressure/input to the steering wheel aids the process. Routine fluid flushes and exercising the system is a must. Good job on not taking to the pavement with your locker engaged.

Next time I`ll try the turns.

Next time I`ll try the turns. Easy turns without a heavy load on them are mandatory to get the diff locks to engage and to disengage in a reasonable amount of time. Do NOT try to engage them if the wheels are spinning in the mire. You could easily break or chip the teeth. Anticipatory engagement is the ticket to good use.

I usually engage early on my off road adventures mainly just to exercise them not because I actually need them. My son on the other hand, has a built up Jeep Rubicon and I swear he thinks its un-manly or a bad reflection on his driving skills to engage his lockers! He waits until the last minuet to engage.
