Just picked up my New / Old 1990 W461 250GD SWB

Hey everyone;

some of you already know me, as I have posted in a few times in the past.
But, I just very happily picked up my new G-Wagen. it's a 1990, W461 250GD SWB.
I'll update my profile later on

Anyway, a few observations...already.

I'm in Montreal and just picked it up and drove from Laval to Montreal. If any of you that aren't from here, you should know, we have some of the shitties streets and highways, probably in the world. I've been to 3rd world countries with better highways. But, I digress. Anyhoo, I was in the slow lane, and going about a 100km/h and it's pouring rain out, I noticed the truck was going right and left from the truck ruts. Is that normal? Tires, suspension?

Anyway, while driving on the highway, and going at about a 100km/h, I would guess she's revving at about 3500 to 4000rpm (no tach). Is that what I should be revving at?

Initially, I was thinking of getting much taller tires, in the range of 33's. But, after realizing how high up she's sitting as it is, on stock tires, perhaps 31's would be more than adequate.

I'm quite impressed with the wiper setting. I was expecting just 1 or 2 settings.

I noticed that there's a leak, under the dash, passenger side. Any ideas where to start and looking for it?

Anyhoo, I don't want to push my luck with too many questions. But, it's also fun when there's a lot of posts and peeps are sharing.

Cheers
Chris

If you're running wider and bigger tires than normal sedans, it's quite common that a rutted road will make the G wander a bit. Big tires will make the width between the outside of the tires just a little wider than the center of the ruts, so one or the other of the tires will ride just a little up the side of the rut. The G doesn't "fall into" the ruts and follow them, like a normal car.

If your steering damper is worn, the G will wander more.

Congrats on your new to you truck.

Remove it and try to compress and extend it. You should have resistance. If it moves freely, it's worn out.

As to the leak on the passenger side, it's more than likely coming in around the wiper shaft on the passenger side. Is the cap covering the shaft present? Different solutions have been discussed here many times. Do a Search to find them.

Chris...if you change the damper, be sure to use the BEEFIER 463 one, A slight modification to the bracket is needed.
I do have dampers and brackets if you need.
Do you have some pictures...

I believe these 250GD have got the 5,28:1 geared axles, indeed these will give more engine revs at a certain speed.

If you post your VIN, I can check what gearbox and axles you have.

Axle gearing can be verified on the type plates on the axles (next to the diff housing cover.
Transmission code can be found on left or right side of the transmission.
