460 Metal fuel tank with round plastic piece inside.

I am having the Renu process done to my 460 Metal gas tank. They said they need to weld an entire new bottom on to the tank.

They called me because there is a round plastic piece inside the tank. Does anyone know the purpose of this? Should we keep it in or can it be removed?

Re: 460 Metal fuel tank with round plastic piece inside.

I call it a fuel accumulator (there are a few different names for it) and it is there to keep the fuel suction opening covered in fuel during braking, turns and/or driving inclines. High fuel states are not as much of an issue but as the fuel level is reduced, without it, your pump could suck air. It is designed to easily let fuel into it, but make it hard for it to get out.

When RENU did my 280GE tank, they removed the accumulator and replaced it with a metal one similar in purpose but different in design. It had to survive their baking process. I had no issues afterwards. Do ask them to make sure that their solution does not inadvertently cover up critical fuel paths into the accumulator.

DO NOT LET THEM REMOVE IT!!!!!

The guy who lined the tank in my 230GE (same tank, outlet, and pump as 280) swore that he had done other MB tanks and had no problem after removing the plastic part. He was WRONG. Just below 1/2 tank now the truck will cut out on hard right hand turns. As a result, I can only use 1/2 the fuel in the tank and only go about 180 miles MAX before needing to fill up.

PS - JR - any way you could put me in touch with the source for the metal fuel cup? I'd like to get one installed in the 230's tank, which is now otherwise fine. Thanks!

Dave,

That was 19 years ago and the receipts all went with the truck. I did a quick www search for the geographic area for the RENU dealer and there is no longer one there. I am afraid what the mech made is long gone with him.

have a read here and see if this sounds like the same plastic piece. If it is don't remove it, unless you alway plan on running a fair amount of fuel.

RE: 460 Metal fuel tank with round plastic piece inside.

I had my tank for my 460 done by a Renu somewhere in the Midwest about 8-10 years ago, similar outcome as Hipine. If I am at a quarter tank or less and go around a corner 30+ mph I get a fuel starve miss until it splashes back. I wondered about the fuel cell foam they sell for tanks in race cars. Keeps the fuel from sloughing, comes in blocks you stuff through fuel filler. Actually someone on here suggested it a couple years ago. Anyone used it?

Re: 460 Metal fuel tank with round plastic piece inside.

Thanks for the feedback. I had my guy fabricate a metal fuel cup inside which seems to do the trick.

Now my issue is that there is no fuel filter.

I installed an Inline fuel filter but it takes up too much room and won’t connect in a straight line to the fuel pump.

I tried making a loop with the 1/2” fuel hose but it ended up with a kink and makes driving impossible.

Any ideas on a shorter fuel filter or a way to not get kinks in the full circle of hose?

I’m considering putting in some 90 degree connectors but it doesn’t feel ideal.

Hirsch. Try getting a Mann WK31/5 diesel fuel filter.
It has 90 deg on one end. ALTROM
