Photo Hosting Website

A while back someone posted a link to a German website that does photo hosting for linking to other websites like P3.

I can't seem to find the post. Does anyone remember and can point me to it? TIA.

picr.de is a freebee picture hosting site.  The viermalvier.de forum picture posting instructions suggest using it.

I am pretty sure that someone posted recently on P3 using that German photo hosting website.

Unfortunately, no changes to the P3 website are possible at the present time. Our webmaster is MIA and completely incommunicado.

Sadly, I am coming to the conclusion to let go of this website and let it die. There are just too many features that no longer work properly; and without a webmaster, they can't be fixed.

RE: Photo Hosting Website

Although I haven't been here for long enough like most of other members, I'd really hate to lose P3.
There is something about this place,at least for me, than any other MB forums out there.

Would it be possible for some one else to buy or take over management of the site?

I think the offer has been made but the owner never responds — Dutch will correct me if
I’m wrong.

We need to start scraping an archive of the site...too much knowledge to lose

Some of us have done so in the past, I would have to check my archives, to see what is still there.....

Scraping is too difficult, though there are sites out there such as archive.org (Way Back Machine) that do archive sites, to a limited extent.

The best thing to do would be to just import the entire site (photos, post database and all) and convert it to a more modern forum software format.  There are a number of both paid and free forum software packages out there, such as phpBB (free), SimpleMachines Forum, vBulletin, XenForo, and probably a dozen others.  All of the ones I mention can directly import this forum's data and photos and preserve all of the user names/accounts/info as it is posted, and would be a significant upgrade.

IMHO there are too many (fragmented) G-wagen forums out there and it would be great for someone to take the lead and create a "definitive" site that can become the leading resource. Unfortunately, "mega-sites" such as Benzworld.org aren't it, as they are far too advertising-driven and slow to load and operate because of it.

What is needed is a MODERN forum software system for G-wagen owners that is NOT RUN FOR PROFIT (i.e. no ads), generous in its resourcing (i.e. photo upload size and types), well-organized, containing solid and informative content, and actively/well moderated.

Tall order....but can be done.

P3

Gerry.

Well said and an excellent idea. The main problem is access to the P3 database; and without the website owner and webmaster, access to the complete database cannot be achieved. Unfortunately, he is MIA and incommunicado. I have emailed him too many times to count, and have received no response for a couple of years.

I've torn my hair out on this subject for quite a while, and have none left on top. I'm getting ready to throw in the towel; and that would make some members of the G community quite happy, I'm sure.

Nope, but it makes no difference in getting access to the database.

I agree. What's needed is someone with enough passion and interest to take over from Dutch. He's been our champion for.... in the interest of his modesty I won't say, but let's say I know at least one current G driver that wasn't alive when he started....

Everyone needs to pass the torch sometime and Dutch may be facing that time.

The problem is, without the website owner's OK, I do not have the authority to pass the torch. Couple that with the fact that there's a lot of stuff that's not working properly or at all (file uploader for one) and the dilemma is just exacerbated.

I emailed the address I have for the website owner this past week asking if he would like to sell the database. No response to date.

Re: Photo Hosting Website

Dutch,

Do you know the owner's name?
Is there any way you can do research on him to find him via other means?
Is there any information listed on the domain ownership through ICANN records?
Do you know who the hosting provider is (if this forum is hosted and not self-run)?
Are there any other designated forum moderators you know of on P3 who you could speak with why may have alternate contact info and/or have communicated with the owner more recently?

Re: Photo Hosting Website

I think it could make sense to contact both the registrant e-mail (pointedthree.com@domainsbyproxy.com) and the registrar (godaddy.com) to explain the situation and see if they can contact the owner to help remedy the situation and prompt the owner to get into contact with DUTCH.

Yes, I know his name.

No other source for research of which I am aware. The owner tries to stay out of the public eye.

I think you posted that information in your next post, and it's all anonymous.

I don't know what hosted or self run means. P3 runs on a co-located server in the NYC area. The email address they have for the website owner is the same as what I use with no response.

There used to be one other P3 mod/admin, but he is long gone to other pursuits; and he had no other contact info for the website owner.

Re: Photo Hosting Website

hosted = located on a server owned/operated/managed by a hosting services provider (a la GoDaddy, 1&1, etc.)

co-located = located on a server owned by an individual or business, that is located in the data center of a services provider (who provides the Internet connectivity, power, etc.) and could be managed either by the owner or by the services provider

self-run = located on a server owned and operated and residing on the premises of a private individual (in their basement, or in Hillary Clinton's case, in her bedroom closet) and managed 100% by that individual

So, it seems that the server may well be owned/operated by GoDaddy. If that is the case, then you ought to be able to reach out to them and explain the situation, and have them use the private information they have on hand to contact the owner and let them know of the situation.

If you know the individual's name, then a quick Google search ought to bring up plenty of information about them, contact info/email address, phone number, and so forth.  It's all out there, and it's pretty much free.  Should require less than five minutes' time to narrow the person down.
