| EGR valve leak
Hi gents My engine hasn't had it's usual smooth idle this past six months. I've suspect either a vacuum leak somewhere or dirty fuel injectors as there are no codes showing up, so I performed a smoke test. Found one leak (tested twice) coming from around the EGR shaft. I've read that some EGR's have metered air introduction at certain points. Might this be the case for the M113 engine? Replacement is cheap, however I would like to hear...any leak is not a good thing..replace it!! Thank you |

Not too worried about the cost of a new EGR, but it's more about the labor to replace.
Hate to go thru all the work only to find the new EGR passes air from the shaft like the old one!

Rough idle symptoms in my G500 were cured with new motor mounts.
Louder than normal clunk when going from forward to reverse and or rough idle? Hold the foot brake when in gear and rev the engine. Smooth rolling about the longitudinal axis is what you want. Jerky movement, clunks, and engine not returning to level are signs of perished motor mounts. This test can be accomplished by yourself by looking between the open hood and cowl from the drivers seat.
No experience here with egr problems. AFAIK

I had my motor mounts replaced about five months ago, they where shot, hopeful but this didn't change the slight bumps in the idle.
Recently added Techron injector cleaner, no difference after a full tank of gas.
Ordered a new EGR, hopefully that's it. If not, I'm onto the coil packs, cables, plugs and then if no difference, the injectors.

No code, as far as the dash light is concerned and I did pass inspection recently.
My reason to smoke test was to see if, the notorious hose.. leading into the manifold, the one used to elongate or shorting the intake ports, it was fine but the EGR was the only are that allowed smoke to escape.
I've a bad EGR on my MR2 turbo for over a six month period, that caused enough exhaust to enter the crank case, turning oil into gray sludge within 1500 miles. At high revs conditions this sludge destroyed the MR2 engine!
This event with the MR2 always brings to wonder why my oil in the MB looks so black every time I check it, even once fresh oil has had time to work its was thru. I want to make sure that is doesn't on this very expensive engine.

Glad your leak is not the notorious one. I have nightmares about it. Take some pictures of your old egr so we can all see the nastiness being returned to the intake.
Hopefully the photo uploader thingamabob gets fixed soon.
There are two well hidden vacuum hoses between IM, transducer, and egr.
