reasonable code scanner

Has anyone ever found a reasonable code scanner that can read the proprietary codes?

RE: reasonable code scanner

www.bluelinkdiag.com

has one for $495.

It has codes like P20C2, P20Bf - I don't think codes like this can be read by the generic readers.

The manual has more specific details than the generic manuals.

Is this a good investment?

Interesting product and about 1/5 the cost of others which claim to do the same. However, this paragraph in the description may say a lot:

Note: CodeLink uses the 16 pin OBDII connector ONLY! Vehicles which do not have the systems wired to this connector can not be accessed. Typically vehicles which have a 38 pin round plug in addition to the 16 pin connector only support diagnosis of motor electronics.

I read it to say that, since I have both the 38 pin and OBDII connectors on my G500, I will only be able to read engine DTC's through the OBDII plug; i.e. no more thn a $90 hand held unit from Autozone.

It would be worthwhile to contact them to be sure.

RE: reasonable code scanner

Dutch,

Did you notice the link for http://www.lmvind.com/index.asp ?

There is a sample page http://www.lmvind.com/sample.htm

Seems like a pretty good resource, but when you don't have problems, $15 a month adds up.

Also, they had a partnership with beckmann http://www.beckmanntechnologies.com/ and brinson company . Both have been around a long time. It makes bluelink a little more credible.

RE: reasonable code scanner

I saw just very recently an OBDII bluetooth scanner - transmitter plugs into the 16-pin socket - and transmits the data to your laptop.
Software was included, priced at around $275.00 from a company in GB - will look for the details again.

Does It Read MB Proprietary Codes?

BUT !! Does it ready the MB proprietary codes or only the generic OBDII Codes? That's where the price jumps come into play.

I heard back from BlueLink:

"It will do engine and transmission on the G"
"I do not believe FSS reset will work"
"If you do decide to try the pro version tool and you are not satisfied with the product you could certainly return it for a full refund less shipping."

Also, BlueLink is owned by BeckmannTechnologies.com, which I think has a pretty good reputation.

RE: reasonable code scanner

FSS is the thing which tells you how long till next service? That's resetable on my car as is without scanner... unless there's other hidden info which is kept.

sounds like the best system for a "normal" price to date.

RE: reasonable code scanner

Ok, got it.

tested it against the generic equus 3100 scanner.

I got a code from the bluelink and generic.

Bluelink - Code P2082 - G3/3 left O2 sensor before TWC(KAT) short circuit
generic - Code P0154 - O2 sensor circuit no activity detected (bank 2 sensor 1)

Then did a search on Wis with the additional info and it all makes sense.

Now, I have to take it to the dealer and see what they get with their tool.

much more detail. that should be worth something - right?

Went to the dealer.

His first question - do you have a check engine light?

No.

Then he said it has to be a false code. Ran the Star Diagnosis and he too came up with the 2082 code.

His conclusion - Bad 02 sensor.

But he was still puzzled since there was no check engine light.

He then used the Bluelink scanner to do a scan check on a new E with an SBC problem.

How does a bad 02 sensor affect the performance?

The O2 sensor directly measures the results of buring the current fuel/air mixture. The engine computer then adjusts one or both of the inputs to get a slightly rich burn. Too rich and you loose power, waste fuel , high emissions and burn up your cats. Too lean and you get burned valves, high emissions and potential overheating.

More modern systems have an O2 sensor before and after the cats. This allows for monitoring of cat efficiency.

Re: reasonable code scanner

or it could just be a freak deal

I get the same code all the time. at least once a month. The light comes on about half tank and stays on until i refuel. Althought one time it would not go back off and was on for like a month. I pulled 10K of tile on a 2500lb trailer. the G's computer said it was getting 5.5 mpg and the check engine light went out

Also they can throw that light for voltage current on the 02 sensor. No clue what that means
