| Running tubes in tubless tires?
Hey people,
Last week while taking the G out for a spin (highway  ) I noticed a white 300GD in front of me. After overtaking this fellow G-rider I took the first off ramp to a rest area to see if he had caught my idea. He followed me to the rest area and a few seconds later we were admiring each others G for a while and exchanging some info about both our cars.
There was one thing in particular that caught my attention. The guy (Belgian btw) told me that he ran tubes inside his BFG A/T's so that when he was using his G off the beaten track his tires would not deflate when they run off the rim for a brief moment.
I can see where he's coming from as I have experienced it myself a couple of times that my tires were flat the morning after taking my G off road. No damage done to them, just had to take them off the rim and then put them back on.
Anyone here with some experience in this field? I mean both issues. a) Running tubes inside tubeless BFG A/T's and b) experiencing flat tires after having spend some time off road.
Thought this was an interesting question, it is for me anyway.

The closest experience I have is that the 205R16 Michelin XC M+S tubeless radial tires were delivered from the factory in 1984 with tubes. I ran them that way until the tires wore out around 40,000 miles. |

If you run your tyres at reduced pressure off road, you can force mud or sand in between the rim and tyre bead of a tubless tyre, this can lead to overnight deflation, on the other hand if you put tubes in a tubless tyre this can counter act the gradual deflation in event of a puncture a tubless was designed for, it will deflate suddenly and catostrophicaly.

I put tubes in my unimog with tubeless tires. My reasoning (right or wrong) was that they were way less likely to debead at very low pressures if there were tubes in there holding everything together. I don't really know if it helped but at the same time I never had a problem with debeading. One note though, There are special tubes you must use for radial tires and they are hard to find, because of the way radials flex, the tube has to be able to withstand quite a bit more heat than a bias ply tube would ever see, you see. Thanks guys for sharing your knowledge/experiences with me.
I guess the beatlock rims the Canadians are using on their military Gs are a good option. Anybody any idea where one could get them and against what price?

Tubes in tires have greater risk of failure at the valve stem area and go flat fast when punctured. Tubeless tires have a tendancy to hang on to the metal object that it picked up and slowly loose air. The valve stem in a tubeless tire will be unaffected if the tire spins a little in a low pressure situation. You may break the beads free and need to reseat them but you won't rip the stem out like a tubed tire. I run tubes in farm stuff when I fill with Calcium to protect the rims but prefer straight tubeless. When the valve stem rips out of a tube due to torque load you are done.

Tubes and low tire pressure is a hopeless combination. Exessive deformation of the tire causes rubbing between tire and tube. This rubbing is enaugh in it self to destraoy the tube. The tube will most likely die an early death when the valve is ripped off when driven at low pressure.
It is common practice here to use rubber sealant when tires are mounted on the rim. The sealandt serves as a filler that makes the tire/rim connection more air tight and makes it far less likely that the tire popps off the rim.
Use 100- 200 gr sealant pr rim.
When you have the tire inside the rim you apply the glue before you pump the tire to to the bead of the rim.

You both are absolutely correct! I had some time back a blow-out due to inserting a tube in a tubeless tire (as suggested by an other "Guru") my luck I could stay on the road and nothing happened. For sure, I will never advise anyone to fit tube in tubeless tires!!!!! "Gorilla Snot" tire sealant is the Answer!

On sandy trips I know lots of guys use tubes in BFG AT tyres.
Works well enough and you can run low pressure.
My sandy trips I've used Goodyears and these things are really hard to pull of the rim.
So tubeless it was.
My other offroad trips I've used Michelin O/R the aggresive mud type and these tyres are a real pain to get on or off the rim.
So tubeless it was again.
