Re: Generator questions

The gasket around the brushholder is not critical. I have seen many of these without them. See if you can work it back in place and use a bit of weatherstrip adhesive to keep it there. It doesn't do much sealing but may cut down on the brushholder contact with the housing. My opinion.

purpose of the condenser

The condensers job is to snuff out alternator noise. The alternator windings put out three phase AC. The diode pack rectifies that but leaves an AC component on top of the 14.2v DC. The condenser smooths out the AC a bit. Not a very important part. A condenser may also be used across the field coil (between the two brushes) to snuff out switching noise as the field is turned on and off. Either way it isn't an important part. Try leaving it off, if you don't have radio noise you are good to go.

Re: Generator questions

I was about to recommend the Bosch regulator replacement with the round backing also (as opposed to that square Huco unit).

When you are done installing that, do a voltage test to make sure you have an output of 14V.

I talked to Steve at Eurotruck this morning. My issue might mean either rebuilding the alternator or putting in a new one. I'd rather put in a new one.

In Malaysia (a place famous for rain forests and various species of insects), the people are smart. They have these bright lights which attract the insects high and away from the road. I was always amazed at why my relatives in Malaysia never had a problem with insects commiting suicide.

Re: Generator questions

Rick,

Did you eventually find what your issue was and had it fixed? Just wanted to let you know my G is okay now. I had to put in a new alternator. I replaced the old 55 Amp alternator with a 70 Amp one.

At the same time I found the belt going around my air pump needed replacing. This had nothing to do with the low voltage output.

Generator issues solved!

Hey there everybody,

I am up and running again!

Changed out the regulator incl. carbon brushes. I now have a Hella 55 amp. regulator in there. It is the same type as one of you guys described (the Bosch one).

Fixing that loose seal/gasket was a bit of a struggle as I had a hard time opening up the Gennie. I know somebody suggested to leave it out since it's not doing very much but I think that seals/gasket are not put in places where they don't have a function. It is now back in place and the whole assy. is back in the G.

Had to charge my battery big time as it was completely drained. I am going on a short trip today to see if everything holds and I will perform a couple of measurements (both with engine running and engine off) during the day. See what comes up.

Also, I will keep an eye on my ABS light. As some of you suggested, it might have had something to do with the gennie/battery problems.

Will report back!

Thanks for all the input guys ... one very happy G owner is back on the road!

Re: Generator questions

Rick,

Great to hear you are up and running again! I wish I had an answer to the ABS issue. Of course, I have a 1982 280GE which has no ABS. Is het heet in Nederland? Als niet, konden wij uw koeler weer hier gebruiken. Dank!

Ill post a message here when and if I find out what the ABS problem was.

Om eerlijk te zijn, is het hier heel heet op dit moment (32 graden Celsius). Ik weet niet waar het koele weer is maar het is zeker niet hier.
Hoe komt het dat jij Nederlands kan?

Translation for the non Dutch speakers amongst us:

To be honest, it is very hot here at the moment (32 degrees Celsius). I don't know where the cool weather is but it certainly is not here.
How come you understand Dutch?

Groeten / Regards,

Rick

RE: Generator questions

I have a friend in Amstelveen (just outside Amsterdam) who was an exchange student at my high school my sophomore (second) year in 1989.  He taught me some Dutch.  He runs a speelgoed (toy) store.  Of course in 1993 when I studied I Rome, I had a chance to traavel.  I have been to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Den Hague.

My friend gives me good deals on 1/87 (HO) scale models for my German model railroad.  See the attachments.  Can you spot the Gs?

Are you kidding ... Amstelveen! I just came through Amstelveen about an hour ago. Had to pick up my girlfriend from Schiphol airport.

I've spotted 2 G's in the attached pics. Is that correct?

Where did you get the die cast model G's ... let me guess ... your Dutch friend in Amstelveen.

Re: Generator questions

Yep. My friend runs a toystore in Amstelveen. U bent juist. Er zijn twee Gs. I have to keep it in Dutch so our English friends do not cheat.
