| Seat Belt Poll
So we all know that seat belts save lives and most places have a law saying you have to wear one, yet some places its ok to ride a motorcycle without a brain bucket. Anyhoo what percent of the time do you wear your seatbelt ? ? |

As an ex medic in NYC and as a practicing physician who once every couple of years has to suture a corneal laceration from an MVA where the poor person sailed through the windshield I implore one and all, friend and foe alike, wear your seat belt. Even with air bags. |

Apparently here in Australia in the 1980s a member of the New South Wales parliamentary road safety committee came up with the idea of seat belts for motorcycles. Personally, I would never drive a car without wearing one - nor would I ride my bike without a helmet.
BTW, 230G, do you wear a seatbelt when you're in South Africa? I do, and they all think I'm a moffie. |

100% since its our Law - you spend some Euro if you are caught without. Also with a G you have no crush zone if you know what I mean.....so acceleration would be high... |

I would have to say I am at about 90% but as soon as my kids see I forgot it gets right on, they yell at me. In South Africa I have it on any time I am out on the road. When going 10 mph on the farm sorry folks just does not make it on but if I go out to play or am going across the farm better then a few MPH it is on. |

what a strange poll. First of all, obey the law is a good rule.
I used to work in a motorcycle shop selling stuff. And when people would ask me why they should buy a $400 helmet vs. a $100 helmet I replied "5 dollar head, 5 dollar helmet"

In my opinion Seat belt are a "Must" same as Helmets for bikes and quads, however crossing any waterways I take the seat belts off!............you surely don't want to get stuck in your vehicle when it's time to get out in a hurry!

Since it's $130 here if you forget your seatbelt it quickly gets expensive if you have a habit of not wearing it.
I always wear it, since I have no particular desire to go headfirst out the window if I meet an idiot in my lane trying to overtake another, just before I turn. Driving 2,4 tons of vehicle with 88HP for a year along a road that has very few stretches where it's safe to overtake another car, and very few places I can stop to let these impatient idiots pass me, has shown me very examples of idiot driving. Overtaking others just before a turn, just before a hilltop etc. I recon I'll meet one of these suckers one day, coming towards me in my lane, with no time to avoid a crash...
Oh - by the way... Most fatalities where somebody in a SUV is killed occurs when people are not wearing seatbelts in their oh so big and strong vehicles. It really doesn't help with a solid car if you try to test that solidity with your forehead or you get thrown out of the vehicle.
Wear your seatbelts, folks...

As a Firefighter/EMT here in Albuquerque, I see the result of not wearing a belt regularly. The inpact of the windshield is on thing, what a lot of people don't concider is a simple or violent roll over involving an ejection of you body almost every time! I've seen people pop out of a sun roof only half way open, all of the other windows closed and not broken, only to be crushed by their own vehicle or tossed out in to traffic to ruin someon elses day.
I also ride a Buell, and that involves your own grip w/ mortality weather you can ride a bike or not.
Either way its a no brainer, DO WHAT EVER YOU POSSIBLY CAN TO GIVE YOURSELF THE ADVANTAGE OF SAFTEY IN A WRECK THAT WILL HAPPEN AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT, NO WARNING EVER!!!

Will you consider letting yourself fall forwards and then try to stop yourself from hitting the florr by extenting your arms and catching yourself ? Try doing it while standing on a chair... That is similar to crashing in a wall at not too great speed...
Try to drive without your seatbelt and drive at, say, 15mph or so. Then do an emergency brake and brace yourself against the steering wheel. After you have done that, consider your normal driving speed in the city, and then that the violence in a crash between two cars wil be equal to you going into a wall at twice your speed.
The damage done to the car and the people within will increase with the square of the speed increase, so when you double your speed, the force on the car and the people within will be quadruple, and nine times more if the speed increases by a factor of three.

I remember about 15 years ago I was in my 68 Ford Pick Up
No seat belt hell I do not think it even had them maybe a lap belt.
Anyway I was going about 15 MPH and some idiot pulled out RIGHT in front of me. I hit the breaks for maybe 5 ft befor hitting them. Going that slow in a old heavy truck and hitting a van, I bent my stearing wheel and broke my right arm (compression fracture) Just think what 35, or worst 55 would do... |

| Glow plugs help complaince ... really!
Insert key,
turn to glow,
click seatbelt while waiting for glow plugs,
turn to start.
It gets to be such a habit that I do the same thing in my gasoline powered 230SL.  |

Sat in my wife's disco a few times with the key turned to where glow should be while tuning the radio and doing the seat belt thing |

Just realized something...
If you're driving along where there's a risk off going really offroad and into the water, wouldn't it be either a question of either you wearing a seatbelt and then having to get it off before evacuating the sinking ship, or not wearing it and risk being knocked unconscious in the (probably) rough ride before entering the water and then drowning anyway?
I think I'll wear the seatbelt anyways...
