newbie/tires

I have been lurking around since you all were over at the other place and have enjoyed the wealth of info. Being somewhat new to the G I never had any helpful info to add. However just thought I would let you all know that I recently put a set of the Toyo AT's 285/60 R18 on and my ESP went crazy (activating in most down hill corners above 35 MPH and under any hard driving situation). Three trips to the dealer and a new ESP computer and the problem still exists. The dealer was very helpful and even gave me a set of tires and wheels off of an 06 to go drive around on (the problem went away). Now they say it is the tires and they will only deal with it if it has 265/60 R18 110V. Is there any decent tire out there that has that rating?

Re: newbie/tires

Thanks for the info, the Bridgestones are not listed in my US owners manual and I guess I should clarify, by "decent" I meant something other than the yokohamas. I found them to be less than satisfactory most off road conditions.

Re: newbie/tires

If I remember correctly, a number of the guys who run tires like that have changed the tires size setting on the trip computer. Some of the tires handled the larger size better than others. Try to change them one by one and see what kind of changes you see.

Re: newbie/tires

I may be wrong on this issue, but I think the dealer can reprogram your computer for different tire sizes. You may want to check on this, or call another dealer.
Good luck.

Re: newbie/tires

On the newer models, I think that you can do it yourself on the dash...

RE: newbie/tires

You should kindly ask them to try one more thing. Set the computer for tire size 265/75r16. That is a much better match for tire diameter of the toyo's becuase it's 1" larger diameter than stock. Your truck may behave with that change. And they should be comfortable doing so because it's a factory changeable setting.... i remember correctly guys that this is an option in the new trucks? I'm certain that's the size you want to set it too, i just can't remember if it is infact available to be changed. pretty sure.

Re: newbie/tires

Also ask them to show you how to change the tire settings yourself.

I'm pretty sure that it has to be done through the MB computer; and is in no way accessible to someone without the MB equipment.

I've also heard that MBUSA dealer techs will tell you that they can't change it or they have no options to change it. This is supposed to be not exactly true. They're just too lazy to go digging to find it.

Re: newbie/tires

I swapped out the stock rims on my 2002 with Brabus wheels and BFG All-Terrains that are about 32.8" tall. They seem to work really well so far...

Re: newbie/tires

Thanks for all the info, my understanding of the system is the adjustments in the dash are just for the navigation and the adjustments done by the star computer are only for the transfer case and will not affect the ESP.

My dealer, after some prodding, has said they will adjust the transfer case tire settings and see if makes a difference. I will get them to try the setting that Ewalberg has suggested.

Anybody else gone through this after a tire change? I mean there was really a night and day difference in the way the ESP behaved between the stock tire and Toyo
