metal shavings

Today was a good day, front and rear axel oil change, TC oil change, new fuel filter, new air filters and new spark plugs, The fuel filter was a pain in the !@#$%.

When I change the TC oil I notice that the bottom plug has a magnet and there was some metal shavings in it what is the significant of this?

thank you

Re: metal shavings

Don't panic, the TC is a gear to gear mesh power transfer and there will be some clash even with the syncros working well. This will cause small flecks and shavings of metal to drop to the bottom and connect to the magnet. Big chunks and balls from bearings might not bode well but some metal fluff is normal I would think.

Re: metal shavings

G1979: I know you bought that G500 not too long ago. You are already having to change the oil? I thought all that was already done by the previous owner. Unless the previous owner did it way before the sale and now it is time--I see. Anyways, you made a great decision by changing that fuel filter.

By the way, are you going to outfit your G with a premium sound system like you did on your old '79 G? That was a nice vehicle too. I am sure the new owner is enjoying it.

As the new owner of a used vehicle, fluids changes would be up at the top of my "To Do" list - no matter what the PO says he did.

No dispute on your description of the fuel filter. After changing it, you probably got an error code when you started the engine, too.

Did you use synthetics in the TC and Diffs? I hope!

The error was to tell you that you were mis-firing on a couple of the cylinders until the gasoline filled the injector hoses.

Just a fore-warning, if you haven't seen it already. You'll get a Malfunction indication whenever you shut off your engine after using the diff locks. It's normal; and is telling you that your ABS was off.

I've been working my way down a long list of items being done as routine and preventative maintenance in anticipation of Treffen 2006 in September.

There's an email list devoted to the Treffen. Here's the URL:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/g-treffen/

I plan to be in the area from about Sept 11 or 12 until 22 or 23. From the discussions on the email list, it looks like most folks will be there towards the end of the week of Sept 10th and on into the week of Sept 17th. Locations are San Juan Mountains of CO - especially around Ouray, since Brent now owns a motel there; and Moab, UT.
