Re: pre production gd #7200130

I don't have the article with me; but the article is in the Brooklands G-wagen: 1981 to 1994 book. There was an article about the Australian Ministry of Defense having a keen interest in the G. There were talks of setting up a facility to assemble CKD (completely Knocked down) kits. I will have to look it up and scan it to an acceptable size to be uploaded to this forum.

Unfortunately, the contract was never won and therefore the production was never made in Australia.

Rick: Yep, that was the article I was looking for. Thanks for the scan and post.

Mortinson: Thanks for the follow-up information about the contract never moving forward.

RE: pre production gd #7200130

In all these years in the G-Wagen scene, I have never heard of pre-production Gs except for those which were made in 1989 for the preparation of the W463 GWagens.

I obviously can be wrong but it looks to me that this car is not a prototype. It is obviously an early G-Wagen and the datacard posted by Peter might be the correct one for this car. All the data in the card are consistent with the data and pictures shown on Ebay, like the Agave Green paintwork, the interior in black, the front tow-coupling, the rear towing kit, the swivel-type spare wheel carrier, etc.

In any event, doesn't seem that the vendor swindled anybody, for that price.

Regards,

It was called Project Perentie, and MB lost out to LR. I spoke to one of the army people who took part in the evaluation and he said they were more impressed with the G - but in the end it came down to cost.
Here's what they went for in the end: http://www.4wdonline.com/Perentie/Perentie.html
There's also an interesting Malaysian G on that site: http://www.4wdonline.com/Mercedes/Gwagen/290GD.html

Further to Kermit's post on Project Perentie. The Australian Defense Force are currently out to tender for a replacement to the Perentie vehicles (and just about all its armoured and non-armoured vehicles). This time it is called Project Overlander and within that project there are many segments - some of which have been signed, sealed and delivered - part of this included an update to the current LR fleet to keep it going for a few more years, howewver the segment in which the G is contending (Land 121), is not due to be finalised until about this time next year. The Unimog is currently used by the ADF and is also up for re-tender. We are keeping our fingers crossed!
